Default Dumb question, but bare with me, wanting to turn a 16v into an 8v.

I'm looking into possibly picking up another Civic for a daily driver, the one i'm looking at is a DX, based on the VTEC-E, would it be possible for me to remove one rocker on the exhaust and intake side in order to gain better fuel economy? I figure it won't effect driveability too much as it will only see RPMs of 3-4k.

I figure it'll probably run rich if i do this, but I have a chip burner, not sure if the ECU is capable of uberdata...

I don't see why it won't work, someone perhaps have some input?

Why don't you just buy a VTEC-E engine or just a head? It would be a whole hellofalot easier.

I'm trying to save money, not spend money.

What's hard about popping off a valve cover and removing rockers? Alot easier than a head or motor swap.

I dont know how safe that would be. Let us know how it goes if you do it.

I don't either, that's why i'm asking for input.

I don't see any reason it wouldn't work, not sure how beneficial it would be either though.

VTEC-E is the technology used in the VX 92-95 Civic (and maybe the later model HX?).

It runs the engine on 8 valves in low rpms, then in high RPMs, it kicks over to 16 valves.

AFAIK 16v = more fuel economic than 8v, because of several factors... not sure though...

but I also think I read somewhere that the VTEC-E has an AFR of 20:1 in the lower rev range... also dependant on TPS (at least, that's what mine seems to do, press on gas, even at 1500 rpm will make the econo light go off )

anyways, the VTEC-E was meant for fuel economy, and I don't believe stripping the system from it's upper power band will really help you when you're driving in the lower power band...

If you wanna go cheaper, why not get a smaller engine, like a d13? or, depending on the difference in price, get a DIESEL engine from a 2001+ euro accord... fuel economic, nice torque / hp figures for a DD civic and cheaper fuel... I just don't know what diesel prices are in the states...
(you would be the first to try as well I think)

We don't have a D13 here, or a diesel Honda engine.

It'd cost atleast $500 (that's pushing it) for any motor swap, nowhere near it to save maybe a dollar or two every time i fill up. It'd never balance to actually saving money.

Is it about $.30 more than 92octane premium right now. It is cheaper to run my boosted honda than it would be to run a deisel Accord motor unless that motor has damn good milage.
