Default wheel wobble - threads strip

Great Forum and enjoy all the posts.
When I was driving home last night on the freeway, I notice rubbling noise coming from the wheel, I got off and see if the tire blew, but that is not the case. I managed to get home and check the two front wheels. The driver side is the problem with the lug nut being loose. I lift the car up and found that the thread connecting to the hub assembly is partially striped. But I was able to turn it once I get the car back to the ground and secure the tires. Do I need to change the threads? And if so, how difficult is it? What else do I need to do to get this back on track? Thank you for all feedbacks.

Not knowing what year or model you have I'll give you illustrations for the 3 most popular generations. The wheel stud is replacable, but it appears to be a bitch in the 4th & 5th Gen versions (you have to get the rotor out of the way to access the back of the hub flange.
True, passing a die over the stud may clean up the threads (somewhat). But if it isn't started square, you're gonna make it worst.
You should have it taken care of tho, it only leaves three good??? studs holding your rim on....

4TH Gen: (#23 in Illustration)

Although i definitely agree with you to get it fixed (new stud/nut combo is gonna be like $3 apiece) I happen to know that the old 5.0 Mustang GTs are 4 stud and I know a few with broken studs on the rear. I say this just to reassure you that the wheel isn't going to fall off, however I'd still get it fixed. You hit a curb hard or hit a pothole and who knows.

Another thing is if you have aluminum wheels its a good idea to retorque (80 ft. lbs.) them after 50 miles because the softer metal works a groove.

thank you for your reply. I know it is not easy to get the rotor out of my Honda Accord. It takes some work to get it done. Anybody can walk me through the steps. It is a 96 honda accord, LX model with 4 doors. The wheel thread is connected to the rotor and the hub assembly. Am I corrected? What generation is the 96 model?

Thank you in advance.

The '96 Accord is one of four years which comprise the 5th Generation of Accords
IE:
1994
1995
and
1996
1997
All the same body series, with minor changes (between the two groupings) to Front & Rear Bumper Covers, Tail Lamps, Trunk Lid and Emblem treatments.

Where can I find the tap and die set? Is it available at autozone or Kragen?

If you can find a Cummins tool that'd probably be your cheapest bet. Make sure you have the right die. They make both metric and standard in many different sizes so make sure you have the right thing (you can probably call a parts store and get it from them). Its a longshot but you might see if you can rent one from a parts store as well. The larger chains usually have tools to rent, not sure if they'd have a tap/die set.
