would these help stiffen a roll cage?

so for the main hoop, would it better if i took out the 2 smaller inner 1s and made a huge x across the hoop instead?

haha that post made me laugh. i was just wondering if triangulating those bars would help with the chassis stiffness. i guess not?

you'd have to break it down and actually figure out the vector mechanics of the geometry. Simple and could be done, but you'd have to design it with the idea of how much force N you'd be applying at one point. IE like when you crash at 100mph a force will be applied on this part and this side of the cage through these points over this area with a 2500 pound car. As far as flex, the longer each piece is the more deflection it is allowed. And depending upon the theta and the rho of the tube as it corresponds to opposing tube in the cage, the tubing will be supported in only a few directions. im tired and high.

If you ran bars closer to the body it would have been better to integrate the cage into the body by welding the body to the cage along with the main points the chassis.

wow, thats helpful.
Look in the rr/ax forum archives - search for 'cage' - you'll find some pretty good designs and starting points. I'd put a diagonal in the rear support tubes, and run bracing from the rear pickup points to the main hoop pickups on the floor (one on each side).

you just threw ALOT of bars in the rear of the car, but you didn't do anythign to the front. You don't even have a front hoop. Thats a Drag racing cage, im not sure why it would be put in a RR car

its not my car, i just used it for an example. of course i will get a 10 point cage from s&w for road racing. what i added were cross bars in the main hoop, and cross bars in the rear legs. i couldnt find a pic of their 10pt cage installed so i used that 1 as an example.

thats a horrible idea, i have seen pics of the S&W cage and they fit like ****.

the s&w cages arent made to fit exactly. they are cut a little long and you have to cut and notch them to size. so its fine. id rather do the cutting, notching, and welding myself.
Read up on that. Pretty much everyone I've talked to who got an S&W setup regretted it, and suggested going with a custom deal.
ive installed a few from kens customs, and the main hoops are pretty tight up against everything . looks way better than the main hoop in my crx that was bent by someone with a great reputation on the east coast.
Custom cages aren't that big of a deal if you know what you're doing. I bought over 65' of DOM .120 wall tubing for less than $200. There's a little place near me called Dillsburg Aircraft Works. The specialize in all kinds of steel and fasteners. They are by far the cheapest around, and everything they have is high quality. I made my own templates and had a sprint car chassis shop bent it for $200. I'm fortunate to have friends who weld for a living and who are going to put it in for a case of beer. So when it's all said and done I'm going to have roughly $500 in a custom cage.

This is the exception rather than the rule. Most people would have a hard time accomplishing the same thing for two or three times that. And with steel prices at record levels, I doubt you could buy 65' of .120 wall DOM for less than $300 anywhere but a scrap yard.
Reasonable minds may differ...

Hhahah thats Stevemodes hatch. YOu can get the rear x-brace from S&W for like 44 bucks. The only thing I don't like about my S&W roll bar is the two lower braces inside the hoop instead of one that comes from one corner to the other corner like the autopower bars do. OTherwise for 170 for a 8pt cage isn't that bad.
