GS-R Transmission
An automatic transmission is totally different. If you look on a site such as http://www.howstuffworks.com and search for "automatic transmissions" you'll see the workings of it are totally different.
EDIT: Here... How Automatic Transmissions Work
Besides it only being a 4 speed (on our cars, at least), the gear ratios are totally different.
I'm sure lots of other people will chime in with more detailed explanations involving planetary gearsets and torque converters. But I'll let them do it.

if you have a manual and you're even thinking about an automatic, try this:
drive around without ever using third gear, and even when you really want to get somewhere fast, take 2-3 times as long to shift as you would normally. on top of all this, don't downshift until 3-5 seconds after trying to accelerate in your current gear. this will approximate the BALL SUCKING of an automatic on a naturally-aspirated four cylinder car, especially one as high-strung as a GSR Integra.
if you have an automatic and are thinking about a manual, think about this:
every time you wish your automatic would accelerate the car, it will. your 1/4 mile times will drop by at least 1 full second, and an automatic GSR that used to get beaten by stock civics will now show up most other stock hondas on the road.
what is it you're trying to do? auto to manual swap? or are you trying to decide whether to buy a swap with an automatic transmission attatched?

JDM y0. automatic skyline turbos, automatic civic SiRs, and more. they have lots more traffic than we do here, and most drive less, so gas mileage is a bit less of a concern for many.

wow, this is a broad question.... auto has 4 gears, manual has 5. Auto's shift automatically, maunals need to be shifted by the driver...lol I don't know where to start answering your question!!

Yes, but the ratios are totally different. They are not made to be shifted, so the efficiency of shifting an automatic versus a manual is totally different. Think about how fast you can accelerate in 1st gear in a manual. You can go like 10-15mph. In an automatic, I believe you can hit over 30. That alone shows you how much more mechanical advantage a manual transmission has over an automatic.

and since the manual has 5 gears, the gears are shorter, which means you stay higher in the revs which means you go faster. by A LOT! it's like the difference between a B16 trans and an LS trans all over again. B16 faster than LS by what, 1/2 second in the 1/4? well automatic is slower than LS by a full second, so go smoke that in your VTEC for a while. if you don't have a V6 (or I4 Turbo) at least, automatics suck because it makes your car HELLA slow.
thanks for all the input i didnt know it had only f0ur gears i thought they where the same, my tranny is grinding and i thought that i would just buy an auto and swap the internals over to my manual my because i seen auto trans go for cheap on ebay
nope. NOTHING except some bolts and maybe the vehicle speed sensor in and automatic will work in a manual transmission. just buy a used transmission or have yours rebuilt (hehe i can do it; /shameless plug).
