Default LS/TURBO RELIABILITY AND GAS MILEAGE?

I'm not a tree hugger so I REALLY dont care about the gas mileage but I was thinking about doing an LS/TURBO set-up with the greddy kit because it's C.A.R.B legal.....BUT I will have to drive the car for 210 miles at a time to go home from the base that I am stationed at over "the grape vine" where everyone and thier mother over heats or breaks down.....I was wondering of the people who have them is there any heads up on things that I should replace EXTERNALY on the motor (bottom end rebuild/top end freshen up being done already). The motor only has about 40k on it and was never beaten on, I just want to protect my investment....and it DOES help that I know the guy who owns the engine shop...so...are you guys maintaining reliability when driving for long distances and stop and go traffic?I was thinking of just getting a bigger radiator and some electric fans to be on the safe side, but was wondering what you guys run? Any help would be apreceated....thanks in advance..

These are hondas, if you build it right, they will be reliable. Keep the boost within you range, like 8psi for daily driving, I dont kno how much the stock ls block cant handle tho. Cooling is a must, so if i was you, get a aftermarket radiator from like koyo or fluidyne, also get slim fans from FAL or something, helps alot. Get a radiator cap thats 1.3 kg/cm3 and a aftermarket thermostat and thermoswitch (from like spoon or mugen), it will raise the boiling point and also it turns the fans on at a earlier time, so it cools alot better.

YEAH....thats what I thought....I'm just starting to read about ls turbos because I saw a four door white civic with an LS/TURBO set-up at IRWINDALE...fell in love...WHAT A SLEEPER..even had a BABY SEAT in it...the simpson racing seat look-a-like one....I'm debating wheather to do dish pistons so that I can run more boost with pump gas, or just do a stock rebuild....I only want to get 200whp or so.....any more, and I will DEFINATELY GET EN TROUBLE...ha ha...and once this is done I will be eating PB&J for a LOOOOONG TIME...so I am asking questions now instead of getting headaches later....

I've been running 17 psi for almost 6k miles with no problems....but I have a badass tune. The gas mileage suffers a bit....but it's not that bad...worth it for all the fun.

Wow that's pretty cool how nothing in that is true...usually something is correct, but there is nothing in that one. Sorry I'm mean about it, but you don't need better cooling just because it's turbocharged. I (along with others) actually downgraded my radiator so I could fit the turbo in. All it is, is a stock dual core from a Del sol VTEC. Also you can def. go higher then 8PSI with correct fuel managment. 280-300whp seems to be a safe limit for stock engine. See my sig...I'm doing 328whp on stock internals BTW

THANKS ....when you got the del sol radiator did you use electric fans on it or do you do just fine without them in stop and go....I was also wondering what you have done to your trans, and if you have an LS trans.....TO ME....if you run a turbo motor like this you would WANT to have the longer gears in the LS trans.....oh yeah...and how bad of traction problems do you have at the track with all of that TQ? I was thinking about having the car just tuned by GREDDY because I live in Huntington and they are right here....and after all...they did design the kit.....do you have any problems with pinging using pump gas....and do you have any problems with detonation with your stock ignition set-up?

1.) slim line Fan acting as a pusher style...no overheating problems and the fan barely goes on anyway even in heavy hot traffic

2.) LS trans is the worst trans...shorter gears is ALWAYS better. I have an LS, but that's because I'm stock

3.) Traction was handled by daily driven drag radials

4.) Greddy kits don't need to be tuned, they come "pre tuned" outta the box.

5.) I have no detonation or pinging. If I did my motor would be dead by now

i have a greddy turbo kit on my 01 gsr, they are a very reliable and they give u nice power, but note, if u put an intercooler, and bov u are no longer street legal!!!, and u do have to tune them, i personally am not using the emange cause it is way too limited, so instead i have a obd1 p72 chipped and tunned with crome pro and my car runs great.... no cels, perfect fit, of course a greddy kit left stock will not yield u as much power as like drag, revhard etcc, but u can alter things on the greddy kit to gain more whp...

oh and i am running my stock radatior and fans, and i have no porblems whatsoever!!!

and i don't believe greddy tunes car's, u want to go with a different engine management then the emange imo..

DAMN....I havent heard about the whole intercooler and BOV thing before....does anyone know WHY that is...or if its totaly true ( no offense man). I remember seeing something about the intercooler being optional...but I would have to look and see....I know that the BAR site has what the ENTIRE CARB EO# covers with the kit...I will try and find it and post it so that theres no grey area.....thanks for the heads up on that intercooler business...I would have NEVER thought of that until I was handed a ticket....ha ha...

http://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/a...y.php

thats the list for california..you just go under manufacturer and turbo kits...it just doesnt list anything under "modifications allowed" so what comes in the kit.....is whats covered I guess...any optional ****....is....well....not covered from what it looks like to me....some one want to help us out with that one?

How did you find out that the intercooler and the BOV wasnt legal?

talked to greddy, and its a know fact, read the air resources thing, when u alter the kit in any way u take away its legality, so that means, different engine mangement, bov, inteercooler, all are not legal, FYI there is only one inteercooler that is legal that is for a civic that greddy makes, the inteercooler will have its own carb number, i think u need to do a lot more research.. this is coming from someone who has done his ALL install and Tunning..

anthing being "forced" onto the car cant be good.

my car has been thru war.

oil leak who knows where, radiator bust, rear main seal leak, cam seal leak, car seems to think for itself, like whenver it wants to, it will start having an asthma attack and idle all weird on me.

It sounds like your callin me a newbie with that last part....I dont know very much about the LS/turbo set-up and smog legality.....thats all I was askin....I've done projects like this before, just not honda ones is all....so a newbie to the site....just dont think that I'm some KID who memorizes every page of import tuner and thinks that EVRYTHING american is slow and not efficient.......thanks for the info...
