It needs to be cared for like a normal clear coat. If there's no clear coat, and it's not waxed or UV protected, it will look like crap.

I think normal CF looks like crap anyway, so I'd just paint it from the start.

be careful when lowering the hood too. I saw a guy splinter the crap out of his 'cause he dropped it and let it slam down on the pins. You can't do that like you do with metal.

Def paint it The only "real" purpose a CF hood serves is to make the front end lighter

300 and up for good CF hoods, and shipping really owns you.

if you find a good brand with a bad clearcoat it's not that hard to restore it either

...I don't agree with what you say, because.... ....a messed up clear coat needs to be "striped" before it can receive a new clear coat..... ..the peeling on the paint of some cars is the clear coat.... ....the best thing to maintain a clear coat, isn't waxing every weekend of every month... but.. buffering with a machine a low speed to remove any dirt with a compound to help maintain a smooth surface.

Ar...Wrong

the GEL coat does not need to be stripe, it's not like your rims.
what they do is they sand and buff out the old GEL coat.
most of the time, resin cleaner will get most of it out if not, light sanding will do.

The number one cause for white, muddy looking GEL coat(after couple year of use)is not that you didnt take care of your hood, the number one cause is because the maker of the carbon hood cuts corner and give you the low end sh_t, like everything else you get what you pay for, they can sell it cheap because they make it cheap.

Polish it to hell with your buffer all you what, it will not help.

However, you can restore the hood with resin cleaner, it's 3m brand resin cleaner which is for marine craft fiberglass. They are availble in boat and yahct hardware store. The 3m brand works very well, dont know about the other brand but i know for sure 3m works.

my vis hood is as shiny as the day i got it

paint my hood black with the carbon fiber look
my windshield wiper lights are off the f***in hook

i cant really tell you much about the fading over time question with carbon fiber hoods, since ive never been interested in them and neither have my friends. but yes, most cf hoods i see are top dollar, and for being light weight compared to a normal hood, the shipping weight says different. Youd probably pay less driving to another city and buying one from a performance shop or ordering it through them

carbon fiber hoods "main" purpose is for looks, but the "real" reason is for lighter front end. but wen i go to the track i go all out, i run no hood, no interior, front bumper, rear bumper, no headlights, kinda crazy but oh well, lol

Ive been racing the 1320 for almost 20 years.... and as a VERY general rule of thumb...every 100 pounds or so you can shave of your cars weight...ends up equating to roughly .1 of a second in your ET being shaved off. This being applied to your average 13-14 second ride...

Now OBVIOUSLY... there are limitations to the application of this "GENERAL rule of thumb", but if you think that the weight saved by a CF hood is gonna make your **** any quicker..you're smoking some bad ...whatever you're smokin...

If you want to go faster...and spend around the same 500 bucks to do it, buy a bottle, or save and bOOsT. I know, i KNOW.... Every little bit counts but $500 for 5 hundredths of a second??? C'mon...screw that... Take out your spare tire and paint your hood black, it might not be as COOL, but you'd be a lot smarter, and probably faster too investing your fedy in a actual performance mod.

Bottom line: CF fiber hoods are merely COOL factor...hey, get some neon too while your at it!!!

Once again - just an opinion!

Just an opinion.
