carbon fiber hood questions
so, i just finished searching, came up with nothing...
so, my question is what is involved in refinishing my carbon fiber hood?
its been painted, and the paint is shitty and flaky now.
im wondering if i can sand it down, and clear it to bring back the carbon fiber look?
anyone got any suggestions?

Re: carbon fiber hood questions
ooh, idk. prob no. not really positive though; i think painted cf is cool...
try sanding the paint off, then wet sanding(like 1200 grit) if u start to see the cf, then maybe u can buff it...

Re: carbon fiber hood questions
Yes you can do this easily. Who made it first off? Oddly enough it DOES matter. For companies like Siebon and VIS, their hoods are made of fiberglass, then over-layed. This means that you have a lot of room to sand on it, and still re-clear it without detriment to the end finish. Second whhy was it painted in the first place? It might not be worth reclearing. Sand on it and use water to see what the finish will look like. If it is a "nice" hood, or a vaccum infused hood then you can still do it, but be EXTREMELY careful! If you see that your sanding dust starts to turn the slightest bit of gray, then you are sanding the carbon away. From a painters perspective; don't sand past 320grit. That way your clear-coat has a good surface to grip to. You will need a couple of coats, that will take the sand scratches from the 320 out. Make sure to use a good UV protective clear though or your carbon will yellow very quickly. Then just cut and buff the clear coat. Much easier than sanding and buffing the gel-coat, as you will probably go through somewhere. Pm me if need be. GL!

Re: carbon fiber hood questions
damn, thanks vtechjunkie!
not sure who its made by, but seeing that it fits like ****, it was probably a cheapo version...
also, no idea why i was painted, i bought the car with it and it was painted....
i think ill just wait, and get the whole car painted next year after my motor job is done...
i dont really care how it looks for now, just aslong as its nice and reliable when im finished...
but, if i decide to try it out before paint, i will def shoot you a pm!
thanks
