97 Accord factory cd player
I bought a 97 Accord LX v6 so I didn't get the cd player. I want to buy the factory one that was in the EX v6 models. All I want to know if it will play cdr's ok because that's the majority of what my cds are. Does anyone know?
Can’t answer your question because I don’t know the answer, but wanted to point to a couple of recent threads that might be of interest to you:

As for the CD changer, I have a ’99 and there is an adapter that let me hook up an Alpine CD changer (trunk mounted) to my factory cassette radio, so if you do go the CD changer route you could possibly put an Alpine in and keep your head unit – would be beneficial if you live in a high crime area and want to remain low key (they can’t see what’s in your trunk). Plus the Alpine CD changer I have, which is from ’98 (I bought my ’99 in Oct. ’98 and installed the CD changer in Nov. ’98) definitely plays CD-Rs without trouble.
If I were you though… look for a head unit or CD changer that plays MP3s.

The cd chassis was also available with the '97 SE (among other amenities)
As to compatibility question.... I could only surmise (deductive guess) that the cd audio format is the same, regardless if it was burned with a cdr/w drive or any other means.
The proof of it, call Crutchfield, scan the Forums or chase down someone with either an EX or SE and try playing a disc.

Where would I be able to buy one of those cd changers? Because if I could do that, that would be awesome. I just want to stay with something that looks stock. I took the stock radio out and put in a Kenwood cd player I had laying around but I just don't like the way it looks in there.
Thanks for the info.

my factory cd player out of my 97 se accord, played any type of cd's either it be store bought, or burnt cds.. I belive most factory steros do.
I have a '97 LX Sedan and the changer / tape deck combo. I play burned CD's in it all the time from a CDR/CDRW. I noticed they do not like generic branded media but branded media with a label or logo on it works fine. They do not play mp3's obviously but nonetheless it works great. I am ripping it all out this coming weekend if the weather holds up so I can install a Kenwood in dash DVD player. I will most probably sell my stock setup (Honda tape deck and CD Player so email me if interested): dmarti4444@comcast.net

Are you talking about the in dash 6 disc changer with the cassette deck?

You can get a cd changer and mount it in the trunk or I suppose under the seat I have on in the trunk but like the in dash cd player much better. The Honda radios are crap to start with so I would go aftermarket and not with the stock one though.

I have a Kenwood Excelon in there right now but for some reason I just don't like it. I want a stock look and you can't get that better than with a stock cd player. I actually don't think they sound too bad, just get some aftermarket speakers and they sound pretty damn good.

I'm aware of that. I was just telling him that I sent him an email. If I was asking if he had an email, I would have put a ? at the end of the sentence. Thank you though.

You've got the right idea. It may be a factory chassis, and the music quality may be not the absolute finest quality, but you can rest assured that your car won't get broken into for the radio.
Installed a Kenwood in my wifes' car - radio stolen $700 damage
Installed an Alpine in my sons' car - radio stolen $550 damage
Honda radio in mine - still got it.
Sure tells me something; fences don't pay ^%$* for an OEM radio LOL

Whether the factory radio will play burned CDs is soley dependent on the media you are using. It's not really visible to the naked eye, but cheap blank CDs are less reflective to the laser than the more expensive blanks. Most CDs sold by Memorex and other well-known manufacturers will play fine in almost any CD player. Hope this helps

From other forums, if you have trouble playing CD-Rs try buying a name brand CD-R (as ThagAnderson mentioned), and also burn it at a low speed.

I have a 97 accord EX 4 cylinder wagon and installed a DIRECT CONNECT Alpine 6 disk CD changer to my factory head unit (not an FM modulated which doesn't sound as good). U can doo this as well if your factory radio has CD controld built in, which it should. U can tell if your radio has CD controls by examing the face of the radio and seeing if there is a "CD" button somewhere on the faceplace. My radio has a button that says "AM/CD" just above the FM1/FM2 button.
The Alpine unit is the same as the factory unit (made by the same company) and works flawlessly. HOWEVER, you will need a 5 pin adapter to connect the changer to the 5 pin connector on the back of the factory unit. The adapter runs about $20 bucks. The changer should be available for under $200. Be aware though, this changer does NOT play MP3 encoded discs. Also. VERY IMPORTANT: if you do this, make sure you have the 5 digit factory preset security code for your radio BEFORE you disconnect the radio...you'll need it to get the radio to operate after you reinstall the head unit. If you don't have the code, you can get your code from any honda dealer...you'll need to provide them with some numbers that can be found on the back of your radio. Lastly, I bought my cd changer online from a very reputable electronics dealer. Let me know if you wanna do this cuz if I refer you, we'll both get a $20 credit...an you can apply your credit to your purchase. They also have the adapter on that site as well. GOOD LUCK!
