i don't want to buy a head unit because i wont be listening to the radio or CDs. but rather using an iPod. and im not too keen on dropping $150+ on a mp3 CD readable deck. plus i just want something that plays through the speakers, no big thumping *** system. so here's my thinking:

buy a cable that goes
from the headphone jack -> RCA

then use that cable to go from:
iPod -> amp -> 4 speakers (FL FR RL RR)

keeping this very simple. i just wanted to know if this is common or if anyone else has done something like this? just bypassing a head unit.
