What method do you use?
A couple (2-3) 30-to-10 mph stops to warm things up
A couple more (2-3) 50-to-10 mph stops to get things warmer
70-to-10 mph stops until you smell something really bad, or see visible flames being thrown from the brakes.
Drive a mile or two without hitting the brakes to cool everything off.
Park the car and let it sit.
Brakes are good to go after they cool completely.

Probably varies depending on the pad material?
Seems the rule of thumb for performance pads is to get them hot as hell without coming to a full stop, and then park the car allow them to cool properly (no parking brake!).

I usually do it until I get some brake fade, which is pretty damn hot.

I use the same method as Matt except for the visible flame part.

What Matt said if it's a street car and you can find a place to do it.
On my RX-7 (track only), they just get bedded in the paddock and during practice.
