Are you sure it's a gear and not a bearing?

my 175k mile LS teg had like new synchros in it when i tore it down for a rebuild (and some goodies - the real reason for tearing it down). i couldn't even tell they weren't new. maybe the trans has been serviced in a prior life (i bought it at 140k miles), maybe not. all i know is i haven't had a problem with them. something to look out for is not the 5th gear synchro so much as a SH!TTY 5th-reverse shift collar. since it is so short, it likes to grind up the collar a lot and eventually it will lock you out of 5th gear completely. sucks, but at least it's not an expensive part.

5th gear grinding is most likely a sign of low fluid. Since it's furthest out on the gear shafts, it'll be the first to grind if the fluid level is low. Jack the car up on 4 jackstands (car must be level) and remove the tranny filler plug and stick your finger in. If you can't feel fluid, it's low and you need to add some until the fluid runs out of the filler hole.

Remember the car must be level when you fill and check the fluid, or you won't get the correct fluid level in there.
