Default Oil Pressure Gauge question (easy one, and its different too)

Ok, I tried a search and nobody seemed to question this.

Why can't I "splice" into the stock civic/integra oil pressure sender to get a signal for the gauge? I'm sure there has to be a reason for it.

Also can't I just replace the stock one w/ the aftermarket one and run the aftermarket gauge and also the stock light?

Or, finally - can I do as above (use aftermarket sender), and just use it for the gauge, not the light? Will it throw a CEL or sumthin?

Thanks, l8r

The unit you see on the back of the block, if I am right, is not a unit that reads pressure. It reads that the pressure is above a certain level, but other than that does not return any readings. More of a dumby swithc than anything...

OIC, so its "programmed" to read @ a certain PSI, I thought it would read all the time and send the signal to the ECU and the ecu would determine when to light up the "idiot light", ne1 else w/ some info? cuz I heard from some ppl. that you can run the electrical gauge offa the stock sender. L8r.

the oil pressure sending unit on MOST cars only sends a voltage if the oil pressure drops to 0 psi... or close to it. most electrical gauges will come with the sending unit.

Oil pressure unit is actually just a switch that supplies ground to the bulb when pressure is very low

That is what I was trying to say. Just could not word it in a way that anyone could understand, including myself...

hmm... so the "idiot light" is triggered by the "partial" readings by the sender, and not the ecu. ok, now - the can I substitute the oem sender with the aftermarket one? Or is it necessary to have the T-fitting (basically, can I just bypass the idiot-light and use the aftermarket sender to the autometer gauge?)

The stock unit is an oil pressure switch, when the pressure drops below 5 psi or 3 psi ... it turns the oil light on...

you need to hook up an oil presure sending unit to be able to get oil pressure reading or a mechanical guage
