Preparing my D16Y8 for Turbo.

Ok, I've been reading these forums for a few days now trying to figure out what I wanted to do. I've decided to scrap getting an H22a mostly because I simply don't have the time to do a swap. I have one car, that's it, and I can't afford (literally) to have it out of commission just to get 200 hp.
After reading the forums I'm now left somewhat enlightened... yet totally confused. I'm driving a 97 EX as of now stock (waiting for my H$R Sports Springs to arrive... damn backorders). I want to make around 200 hp, but my question is this. Would it be better (cost efficiency wise) to prepare the engine for the boost first and then drop in a moderate turbo. Or should I put a turbo into the completely stock engine and then upgrade as I reinforce? I would suspect the former, but my question is with a low compression engine will this affect my engine through daily driving? I'm also looking for a ballpark idea of how to get the engine capable of getting to the 200+ hp range, IE what modifications should I be focusing on to get to that point with a turbo.
Two more questions. I don't want a massive turbo, but I want something that would be worth my buy and handles daily driving and mustangs.
Any decent suggestions, and if possible give me some help so I can start looking around at prices and planning how I'm going to save for it.

Well your logic seems kinda stupid.
you dont want to swap because you have one car BUT you are willing to turbo your ONLY car. trust me, turbo installs SHOULD be a weekend thing (**** even a day if everything goes well) but it usually doesnt end up that way. Anyway you can get to 200hpo without doing any internal things to the motor. You can get to 200hp on about 1500 or less. Depends on what quality parts you want and how much extra things you want

well, I turbo'd my girlfriends hatch that had a d16z6 in it with a stock motor, DSM turbo, fmu, missing link, and 9 pounds of boost and it held up for about a month until it blew. But that was just a experiment that we had extra stuff laying around for. But I would invest in perparing the car for boost beofre slapping a big turbo on there, and rememebr that tuning is your best friend when it comes to turbo. Thats something that we skipped

I'm looking into building the turbo myself, note - looking into. My dad's a honda mechanic, so more or less what I'm looking at is collecting the setup and then taking a saturday at his work to put most of it together. I'm not worried about missing a few days for the turbo, it's the huge chunk of time it would take me to do a full H22 swap.

I'm looking into building the turbo myself, note - looking into. The stock motor could handle 200whp, but remember to tune it properly... If cost is an issue I recommend uberdata...
I think a nice size turbo for daily driving and to get you to the 200whp mark, would be like a T3 .42/.48...
But remember that tuning is key, that other guys motor blew because of the FMU...

You can get about 230 average outta a stock d16y8 with the proper turbo/tune. BUT DONT SHOOT FOR THAT INITIALLY. i'd recommend initial hp of 180. if every thing goes well, then stay at 200 with stock internals
Do a compression/leakdown test, make sure there are no problems w/ the motor now.
No FMUs, please dont AFC. One option you have is to get and AEMEMS 1020 because our ecus are not chippable, or if you want to get an obdII to obdI harness and a hondata/crome chipped ecu thats great. Get arp headstuds, consider a new clutch.
Best advice is not to rush into things because there is plenty you need to know about turboing your car right, and if you blindly rush into it you might hurt your car. See if you can find some one who already has turbo'd a honda 'correctly' and ask plenty of questions and search.
Last thing is good parts rarely come cheap, so care on you quest there.

Definitely researching a lot, it just is daunting when you know nothing and there is SO MUCH info to take in at once! I finally have a decent understanding of how turbo's work, so now I'm just trying to figure out all of the extra's.
Basically I plan to collect parts slowly over the next few months, I'm not looking for outstanding yet, I just need to get a nice working Turbo to get an understanding of how it works and how to tune first.

Like deadlock said, you're going to have to look into getting an OBDII to OBDI conversion harness, and something like a P28 ECU. I would run a program like uberdata or crome since they're free.
Hack/FMU = shitty
Spend a lot of time doing research to find out what exactly your HP goals are.
You don't want to build a low compression NA motor. Low compression will make the car sluggish. Guys with big turbos that spool at the high RPM range that run low compression pistions usually complain about how slow it gets to the higher RPMs, granted turbo lag can be tuned out.
Tuned properly your motor will be fine to go 200HP.
A lot of guys go for the T3 or T3T4 hybrid turbos. I'm not sure of their HP numbers, too rich for my blood.
