Sound Deadening Tar. Almost Completely Removed Under Carpet. What Suggestions To Remove The Last Bit
We are removing the sound deadening tar and other crap from under the carpet. The person who owned the car before absolutely had it saturated with anti rust oil spray and it just sat ontop of this crap and stained the carpet and it stinks like ****.
After many hours with the scraper Ive got most of the tar out of there but there is still little bits and an oily coating there that I just cant remove. I used brake cleaner and greased lightning but it doesnt seem to work to get it off.
Anyone know of a product or process to be able to wipe away or break down the rest of the tar on there for easier removal? At this point Im going to need to get like a toothpick or something to get the last little bit off. Its just the minor bit left to remove so we can sand and repaint the inside. Any suggestions would be great.
Thanks

So you just mean a wire wheel? Ive been using one a lot recently to remove some rust under the fenders and when I accidently come incontact with the undercoating or the OEM glue tack crap under the fenders it gums up the wheel pretty badly. But I gues it wouldnt really hurt to try it out. Wire wheels are only like $4.
Im way past the dry ice stage. There was no place open after work when I started and no place open on this weekend either that sold it. So I just manned up and did it the old fashioned way. No reason to waste all that time.

if its just residue of the sound deadening, then try mineral spirits. just pour some on, let it sit for 30 seconds then wipe off. Thats what i did on my integra, with my crx it was so old that the sound dampening just came off in large chunks when i hit it with a hammer and chisel.

You get a box of 5 of those wheels. I think 2 or 3 could easily do the whole car.
If anyone has the tool above and needs wheels. I will sell my mine. Just PM me.

i had done this to my 95 coupe but am afraid to uncover rust in the floorpan on my EF...what is the likeliness that the floorpan can rust through under the material?
there are no signs of rust anywhere else throughout the car...

The one that we are working on now has a lot of rust on it. I mean a lot. But there is no rust on the floor anywhere under the tar that I have been able to see as of yet. Its not too common to have EF rust on the floor pans that Ive ever seen. I mean in the like 10 Ive seen gutted there is no rust on any of them. But there might be some on yours. I cannot guarentee it. Jack up your car and check to see if there is rust from the underside and if so peel back the carpet and remove the tar that is above that spot to see if there is rust coming through.

Well, I've been use "carb cleaner" to remove the remnants of the glue. You'll want a well ventilated space, work in small spots at a time. Wipe off as soon as you spray the stuff on, cause if you leave it for a while, it'll take the paint off as well.

I´ve said it before and I´ll say it again , nothing beats dry ice for this work.
