Default Toda Cam Gears Vs. Skunk2 Intake manifold

I was wondering what you guys would recommend for my next mod on my GSR. I was thinking either the Toda cam sprockets or the Skunk2 intake manifold. Does anyone have the dyno charts for these?

What do you have on the car so far?

It depends on what you have, as mentioned. Do you have Toda Cams? I would use a less expensive gear if not, maybe Skunk2.

Cam gears acheive the same purpose, so a car tuned with AEM, Skunk, Toda, etc cam gears will yield the same power. What makes cam gears differnet is the quality and material. In my opinion Toda makes the best cam gears out there, but the only down fall is they're $300.

Skunk2s are really nice for the $, AEM sucks.

LoL!..Get Both . Well its kinda funny you ask, cause you actually need to tune your car after having the Skunk2 IM installed.. I have an UNTUNED dyno chart of my GSR with a Type R AEM CAI, Skunk2 Intake Manifold, JDM 4:1 Header, Highflow cat and cat-back(on my website below). As you see it really needs to be tuned. Tomorrow night I'll post my Dyno Chart with my Toda spec B's and Dyno Tuning. oh yea...I loved my SKunk2 IM..

Do you think it would be OK to run ITR cams with the stock GSR manifold? The reason i ask is beacuse i have some ITR cams im gonna put in this weekend along with a VAFC and some adjustable camgears. I am going to tune it on the dyno, but should i wait until i get a Skunk2 manifold? i really like the midrange the GSR manifold gives, but will it suck with ITR cams?

Well the Skunk2 IM wouldn't hurt at all, you think about the ITR Cams, they were designed for the Type R Intake Manifold (which skunk2 modeled their Intake Manifold After), Single Short Runners, which flow more air(maybe too much) at lower RPM's and better at higher RPMs, The stock Dual Stage Intake Manifold is very restrictive below 5800(when the butterfly valves open). In short the ITR cams wouldn't suck with the stock IM, but you would see a couple of HP out of the SKunk2 with some tuning, And you might not need as much tuning as I needed after tuning your ITR cams, because they flow more air than stock.

Thanks for the info. What do you think would be a good VTEC point, im gonna start at 5200, and work from there, is that a good ballpark estamate? Also, how much fuel correction do the ITR cams need? I am going to be running them for a week or so, and i dont wanna be running lean, or does the GSR computer run rich enough stock? This is an OBDI GSR BTW.

Skunk2 IM on a GSR with stock cams and stock CR makes about 4-6 whp up top and guts your midrange...single stage manifolds tend to do that on a stock GSR or one with just i/h/e. Once you pick up the cams and tune them, the package with the IM will see more gains than 4 -6 whp and the gains will be seen over a wider rpm range including the midrange. It's about gains from engine combination...not staged gains or hp accounting by parts.

Cam gears can be set for more midrange gains or more top end gains. Not both. Your choice as to what setting and powerband location you prefer. You can always find the best settings for both powerband locations and switch them as you go from track to street.

The comment about getting both is absolutely true ..you'll eventually need them.

Yeah 5300 rpm for ITR cam VTEC on a GSR with a GSR IM sounds in the ballpark but no one GSR breathes exactly the same as another (factory variances and proper engine break-in differences will prevent you from copying another person's settings. I suggest doing it right and go to a dyno to tune her using an exhaust gas oxygen sensor and air:fuel ratio readout.

cheers

Thanks for the info. I seem to have an unusually strong GSR(161 with i/h/e straightpipe), but my main question is about it running lean. I cant tune it until a couple weeks after i install the cams, is it going to be running lean with the GSR computer?? I definately am going to tune it with a wideband 02, but not for a few weeks.

If I am gonna need both to notice major gains. Which should I start with? I was thinking the Intake Manifold, because I would love to feel the full vtec from 4-8. Instead of 4 then 6 when the second port kicks in. The only mods I have are a DC sports ceramic coated header. Which I will get rid of soon because of the major loss of top end. Also a K&N air filter. The car is one of those "Factory Freaks". I have raced 4 diferent ITR's and not lost to one. So the car runs strong. Anyways what do you guys think Skunk2 IM or Toda cam gears?

Huh??

Anyways, i would get a good header(JDM ITR 4-1 or DC JDM 4-1), a good exhaust. Then worry about a skunk2 intake manifold. The stock, crush bent GSR exhaust really sucks. Also, about beating ITRs, its the driver, trust me, i know. Good luck with your GSR. Oh yeah, another thing is the gearing. Get an ITR tranny, it will really wake your GSR up since the stock GSR ratios suck too.
