Ignition Timing: 14* BTDC on a 8.5:! built motor?

just wondering if this sounds right to you. My ignition timing is set at 14* btdc (mark closest to tdc, furthest to the right of the 3 ign. timing marks.)
Anyway I was wondering if this sounded correct to you guys? My engine is lowered compression, 8.5:1 and built.
My hondata tuner told me to set it to 14 and i assume i know what hes talking about but i figured id run it by the board.

Last time I checked the hondata website said to set your base timing at 16 then adjust it in the program. Also when I checked last they said to set fuel pressure at 60psi to start out with.
if its total timming your tuner is talking about 14* is way too conservative for that compression. i'm running 18* @15psi on a low comp SOHC and i still think it might be too conservative... till i put it on a dyno.

the only thing awful is that you just might not be making as much power. I'm assuming that he has a reason for setting it at 14 though. Maybe its just set there for idle, but the rest of the maps are adjusted normal.

What you are talking about is what we call "Base" timing. I set every car I tune at 16* for a base. "Total" timing is the timing usually spoke of at a certain RPM and load. Most refer to this as the highest RPM/Load combo the engine see's (shift RPM/load). For example: 8200RPM @ 10psi and having 21* "Total" timing. Your tuner may just prefer 14* for whatever reason and nothing awful will happen because of it.

From what I hear Steve Sakai is a pretty knowledgable guy. If you are tuning it on a dyno, then I dont see it as a problem, cause your tuner is gonna go through it anyways and adjust the timing based on what he sees on the dyno.
But I still dont understand is why Steve would even think about retarding timing at the dizzy onb na low compression motor. AFAIK you have to advance timing to improve driveability for things like bigger injectors, lower compression and larger bore size. So I kinda dont see why he is going to retard the dizzy 2* from base if he is gonna end up just advancing it again through Hondata. Unless this is some sort of tuner technique or something.

he is probablly just a safe tuner. did you ask him to tune your car for the best longevity of the motor or max power. also what is you set up timing is diff for all set ups. and what engine management you use or if you use no management he might just be keeping you safe
