Valve adjustment...
when adjusting valves on a c5 how hard is it to get the appropriate gauge feeler between the lobes and rockers.i ask because i just got eight exhaust valves put in and i cant get the feeler in between there.does that mean my valves are to tight?i was doing a search for code 45 <too lean>and it people said maybe do a valve adjustment. could this be related?????????
You must turn the crank to TDC for each cyl you are adjusting valves for. You loosen the locknut, and turn the screw until you feel drag on the feeler gauge. Then turn the locknut and make sure the screwdriver is being held tight so it doesn't slip out of spec. Once the locknut is tightened recheck. Make sure you go in the firing order, 1-3-4-2, and make sure you are at TDC for each cylinder you are adjusting.
I had code 45 and was running way too rich. I tried everything that was a possible cause going by the Helms chart. When asking advice, everyone told me it sounded like a faulty ecu because the normal maintenance items didnt help, but then I checked the valve adjustment....
As it turns out, it was the valve adjustment.
Wish i had checked the valve clearance before replacing a working o2 sensor

It is possible for all of your valves to be too tight. In that case it would be difficult to get a feeler gauge in. Loosen the lock nut and back the adjustment screw out 1/2 turn and try to insert the feeler gauge again. Once the feeler gauge is in, hold the lock nut and turn the adjusting screw in until it makes contact with the feeler gauge and you begin to feel resistance. Not too tight because it does not take much effort to compress the valve springs. There should be a slight drag on the feeler gauge when you pull it out. got the valves adjusted today results were the exhaust side with new valves installed were to tight, intake side was all too loose. so adjustment was ness.seems to run smoother with no loping sound.only problem i have now is the idle it seems to fluctuate idle cold or hot but sporadically.replaced fuel filter, plugs, wires, rotor and cap.i think im going to sell it any offers??????
also i was getting a code 45 bank one too lean so i checked my plugs again today and they were pretty white.what can i do to get the system to run right or what could the problem be?????

Read my post on these very same issues... Redo the valve adjustment, that is what fixed me....

like I was informed, if you pull the plugs after idling, or daily driving, they will look very lean, but that is ok.
do a WOT run and immediately shut off the engine, pull over, and check the plugs.... I was told that is the only accurate way to read the plugs because they reflect the air / fuel mixture at the very instant they are pulled.
makes since?
i would just reset the ecu and see what happens from there.
