cause for oil consumption??

Default cause for oil consumption??

I know the h22 is known to drink oil, but I was wondering if the need for a valve adjustment would cause it to be more thirsty than usual...i wouldn't think so but wanted some outside input...I have 87,000 on my 5th gen and know it's up for it...also has anyone noticed a little more life in the motor after adjustment? Thanks for the info!

the rings are shot, or one is actually broken, the valve seals are gone, or a major oil leak-

I go through 1 qt around 1500 miles, and I am usually running my car pretty hard. I use 5w-30 Mobil 1 Full Syn. 87,000 miles

What brings my question up is when I'm pulling away from someone in vtec and I look in my rearview, I see a blueish smoke from my exhaust in the headlights. There is no noticable smoke at start up or normal driving (normal being below 5k rpm). It's seems to be an only vtec problem and intermitent in severity (worse going uphill?). I know with my mileage I need a valve adjustment, could having put off the adjustment worn the valve seals? I wouldn't think so but I could be wrong. I don't think it's the rings (knock on wood) and if it is a oil leak, it's not in the "major" catagory. Thanks for the input! Keep it coming!

Its better to drain all the oil all out, instead of putting a quart in every 1500 miles, just my .02 cents

My 97 prelude does the same thing. Whenever vtec kicks in, smoke starts billowing out the back, however, I always thought this was normal when running your car hard? As for the smoke, was the guys headlights behind you blue (or at least had the blue tint)?

Does anyone else know if this is normal when vtec engages? Or are our cars the only ones smoking when in vtec?

I go through a quart every 400 miles or so - its the valve seals. Checked compression and leakdown and both show rings to be fine. Also there are no leaks. On top of blowing bluish smoke in vtec, I also puff out a good amount when starting in first when I rev to around 1500 and slip the clutch more than usual. Getting the valve seals replaced in october, Ill post the results.

as far as i know, mobil 1 runs really thin. and a lot of ITR guys have problems burning mobil 1....

other than that...your rings are shot

The H22 will always burn some oil because of the oil squirters that are used to cool/lube the pistons (and the H23vtec conversion if you've added the squirters). It's just something that happens. I'm not sure how much you should expect to consume, but of course it is directly related to how hard you run the car.

Check regularily and keep a quart or two with you.

did you know that if your engine burned one drop of oil for every combustion stroke, you would go through approximately 700 quarts of oil between changes?

Yes. You will notice a change after you adjust your valves...especially if they are way out of spec. You will definitely notice a horse increase. You'll get better gas mileage, also. If you're seeing THAT much smoke, I doubt the valves are the culprit.

My 95 burned A LOT of oil before I adjusted the valves. Now, it'll burn one quart every 2000 miles or so, and that is being driven hard, which I don't normally do. Usually, I don't have to add any oil at all from one oil change to another.

Also, as was said, Mobil 1, while good, does burn for some reason. I switched from that to Honda Genuine and it stopped burning quite a bit of oil. Mobil 1 is good though so as long as it doesn't bother you to check it every time you put in fuel, keep using it.

my gsr burned oil when i lived in vtec when i first got it (119k miles). after an oil change (motul synthetic) and a couple thousand miles it stopped for no apparent reason. i also noticed it would puff out a little black smoke whenever i hit vtec. i noticed this from following someone else driving my car. the valve adjustment helped a little, but mainly the car ran smoother, revved quicker and more willingly, and generally just spun up happier. valve adjust

i talked to a guy with a beat up old gsr for sale and he said the car used to burn oil until he ran some engine restore **** through it and now it doesn't anymore. anybody know if any of those miracle cures on the shelf at kragen actually work?

Thats actually a high estimate, I've been going through a lil less thanks to gas prices, try to keep out of vtec...The worst I've gotten was a 2 1/2 hour drive at 100+ mph average speed (5th gear vtec kicks in at 100mph)...went through around a quart then too in about 250 miles....i guess the true average range is 700-1500

i stgongly suggest that you never use those "quick fix" kits because they end up doing more harm than good in the long run...like the stuff he probably put in his engine made the seals swell and stopped the oil leak but in turn reduced the strength of the seals so they will break down and it will leak even more oil. the worst quick fix thing to do is the "engine cleaner" kit thing which breaks down the sludge build up inside the engine. oh it works...it washes off the sludge down into the pan which clogs then oil screen and starves your bearings dry of oil.

dont pour any of that restorer **** into your motor....

use a oil with a thicker hot rating....like a 10w-30....that will burn less....

you ought to check underneath to make sure youre not leaking, h22s are notorious for leaking from the oil cooler seal.....
