Does the VSS affect the odometer to?

My father said when he drove the car tonight that the speedometer would read 0mph then jump to 45mph then 0mph. But I think he also said the odmeter wasnt working either?

Is this due to a faulty VSS or cluster?

If its the VSS youll throw a code for it. And yes the VSS controls the odometer as well.
