OEM Honda Valve Guide ID (inner diameter) hone?
wtf is going on..
i ordered stock oem b series vtec valve guides, and the ID of the guide is too small and not even within spec and the damn valve (supertech race valves) wont even fit in..
do these valves need to be honed out to correct size?
i thought that the guides are drive in and thats it?
thanks for any help

after the guides are pressed into the head ...
you must measure the valve OD ...
Then size the guides for the right stem clearance..
use a hone or reamer ....
after that you must machine the valve seats ....

also, are the guides in the head yet? If so, did the valves fit in the guide before install? I know for the last K series i had to do, the Honda guides that were bought were .5mm too small and had to be honed out. The last B head was a simple install and no honing necessary.
one last thing, did you take a tapered reamer to the ends of the guides. thats a possible reason why the valve may not go in.

these valve guide ID are to small and will not let the valve come in.. they are almost .010" to small.. so they def. need honed out.. which will be much more labor and cost..
imma bout to just send my head to portflow or some other reputable machine shop and get this done right...
i was so **** to get new oem guides for my gsr build, and i didnt even need them, they were in perfect shape..

The inner diameter is exactly 5.5 mm (millimeter). You need a precision reamer to hone the valve guide after the installation. And yes, the valve won't slide in the valve guide before and after the installation. A good hand reamer cost around 40$ to 50$. Hope it will help you a little... and not to late.
I can't say I have re-used stock honda guides.....even with the head heated to 300F, as per factory honda service manual, the guides take out some aluminum when removing them.
I use a bronze type guide......I buy them oversize, i measure everyhole and machine the outer part of the guide to size the guides according to each individual hole in the head, so that I get the correct crush.
with bronze type guides, these are pretty well self lubricating, but they are softer, so the end does crush a little bit when they are installed, i then used a reamer only on the start edge to remove this ridge.....then the guides are honed to each valve size.......the clearances on the bronze guides can be much smaller, so the valve wobbles around much less......a reamer does not "hone"...a reamer reams......you do this often enough and a reamer simply becomes a crude way to do things.
if it is within your budget, I would try to do it as well as possible the first time......send the head to someone who does them properlyy....stuff buried in the engine becomes quite a bit more money to do twice.
Some of the companies who make valves such as Manley, crower and such make their valve stems slightly larger than honda to compensate being used in "used" guides. The supertech valves I have ised have been fine in the stem measurements.
I have never done a head with used guides......I even replace the brand new honda guides in brand new castings.
don't get me wrong, the honda guides are good.....good for their original design and intention......which is not what we need when going for much higher levels of performance than factory spec.
Hope this helps....
