Default 6th gen Pioneer head unit installed

I just installed a pioneer head unit and it works fine and looks great....got it from crutchfield so the install kit was free...pops in and looks clean as hell.

I'll post some pics up later, but if anyone has questions or recommendations on installing a cd player, or wants my stock one, just ask

Sweet. I had a sponsorship with Premier, pioneer's 'premier' line a few years back. What model did you get? If YOU have any Q's, I could probably answer them.

I got the DEH-P4700MP, 160 shipped off crutchfield. Not too cheap, not expensive, but it plays CDRs and MP3 cds

Here they are in the dark, I made sure the lights were green to match the stock interior lights

Here it is in the daytime, it fits in pretty well with the stock interior. For some reason it looks like I'm a coke addict with my shaky hand photography...

And my gf modeling the remote, which is also awesome

Waiting for some better speakers before I do the whole MOSFET, did you use the MOSFET amp when you used your headunit?

I never quite understood the reason for remotes for head units, other than somebody sitting in the backseat. Do you actually use it, if so when?

And why does the compartment below your head unit not have a door?

As for the radio, looks nice. As soon as I pick up a new vehicle next spring, my '99 Lx will be my commuter and I'll put in a new head unit, most likely an Alpine (I already have an ai-net Alpine changer in my trunk, currently running through the factory head unit).

Yes, I've seen people with remotes stick them on their steering wheel and use them that way so they dont take their eyes off the road and hands off the wheel, but my gf is having fun right now controlling the music, and it's pretty handy.

The kit from Crutchfield didnt come with a door, I dunno if it's supposed to have one, all I know is that it fits 3 CD cases in there, but I can just stick the OEM block plate back over that once i find it again.

If you get the new head unit, go to crutchfield and get the player, they have great customer service (I called with a question and they answered it immediately) and every order over 129.99 comes with a free installation kit (wiring harness, double DIN setup, etc) which is pretty good, considering it took me about 2 hrs to do it all myself since I didnt have a crimping tool and I had to use wire cutters. Shops will rape you on installs, much better to do it yourself.

I didn't think that our cars needed a kit, guess I was wrong. I had taken my radio out back in the fall of '98 when I was installing the trunk-mounted CD changer, thought it would be a straight fit for a single din radio. As for a crimper, you can buy a good crimper for ~ $8 at any hardware store (electricians use them), I personally use the red butt connectors though I know the purists swear by soldering.

As for the stock radio you took out... consider keeping it and just storing it in your garage. You'll want it for when you sell the car (so you can take the Pioneer out and have something to put back in), or (worst case scenario) you wreck the car and want to swap out the radio before the insurance company takes it for salvage.

And yes, Crutchfield has a great reputation, I'd most likely buy from them the next time I buy a new head unit. The last one I bought ('00), I wanted an Alpine but Crutchfield, at that time, didn't carry Alpines (they now do). That Alpine (CDA 7839) is in my Volvo, still doing just fine. This isn't a great picture, and the ashtray / storage compartment was removed because I was actually taking a picture of the relay board...

(that white relay on the left is the fuel pump relay, caused me some major pains before I figured out that it was the source of my troubles and I replaced it)

I did an LED dash conversion, but you can't even see it here.

LOL. My pictures only turn out well because of the optical lens stabilizer.

Nope. Pioneer's not known for their amps. THey know the money is in good speakers and head units. I use an older 4-channel MTX amp, similar to the new Thunder 7804.

What speakers do you plan on getting? Are you going components?

My unit comes with the steering-wheel mounted remote.

Most install kits are built to save costs. They save by removing the mechanics. (door)

i've installed an aftermarket headunit and kept the stock bottom compartment w/o a problem, dun see the point of getting rid of that, any standard single din headunit should fit fine in there

That's a Farenheit 7" LCD. I run it off of a modded Xbox I built while in Korea. Mod chip, twice the memory (128Mb), 160Gb HD, full Logitec wireless controller set, DVD remote sensor mounted in the dash, emulators, 740+ Music videos, 19,000 MP3s, 83 Divx Movies, and who knows how many games... I run Xbox Media Center as the operating system, and use it as a "multimedia jukebox." I REALLY prefer a screen mounted in the dash as opposed to flip-ups. Never fails to impress...

The 6th Gens are 98-02. Mine happens to be a 99 model.

EDIT: The xbox is mounted in the trunk with a power inverter. I don't have any pics, but the Xbox button panel is flush mounted in the console, opposite of the radio. A wireless linksys router is also in the trunk and connected to the Xbox so I can just park in the driveway and FTP any new music or videos to it over my wireless network.

FYI: Components are speakers that use a separate tweeter and mid-bass speaker in conjunction with a crossover to 'split' the highs to the tweeter and the lows to the mid-bass speaker. This not only prevents distortion and speaker over-load, but it raises the 'sound stage,' giving you broader, concert type sound. Here's my Premier Reference Series setup. The component set alone retails for over $850, and another $900 for the sub, but I used them in a competition environment, so they paid for them selves. I don't remember the model number, but Kicker makes an incredible component set that I believe is only $200-250.

Here's the entire setup...

EDIT: I think the kickers are the RS65.2, or maybe the next lower line, the KS65.2.
