Default Oil Temp. question

I recently picked up an Oil Pressure and Oil Temp guage(Defi D-gauge for tha bling ). I figured that would be the most critical aspect of the car to monitor. I'll be the first to admit that they were bought for the "look" and also function. I wanted to make sure the oil was up to temp before I start ripping it on the high cam.

What would be considered "normal" operating oil temp for our cars in a regular street/spirited driving scenario? Mine likes to settle between 200F and 220F.

That sounds entirely reasonable. The pressure gauge is arguably the more important of the two, keep more of an eye on that.

Vaguely related to your question, I have a question to all as well. My oil temp gauge never settles to zero, instead minimizing at ~170*. Does this mean that the temperature being measured when the car is running is actually reading higher than it actually is?

I have defi D gauges as well and use the Golden Eagle block adapter with them. At normal temp on the street the car is anywhere between 190-220 with an occasional spike on hot days with the AC on at around 230. At idle i'm at 20-30 psi and between 70 and 80 at wot.

I wanted to wait until my ce28's arrived before I took any pics. Now they won't arrive until mid-Oct. F**K

I probably start another "look at my car" thread very soon.

If your name happens to be "Chris F" then anything below about 300 is good. Normal people get worried if it starts breaking the 240 to 250 range.

dOpie hit 285 at Expo, Erk95LS hit 300+ somewhere else on a hot day. It's not that unusual.

Scott (RR98ITR) gave me some sage advice, put some masking tape over the oil temp gauge. That's worked wonders.

Besides that, putting washers on the hood hinges to raise the back 3/4ths of an inch seems to help. I was around 270F at WGI, ambient temp 75 or so. I do normally run cooler at faster tracks though.

I've seen that before. I always thought it was some ricer/style thing. Never figured it actually served a purpose.

What some others things one can do to lower oil temps besides an oil cooler?

Yeah, my hood is disposable at this point... I've got FIA seats at the top of my list at the moment though. The washers survived at 140, so fuggit, this will work for now.

Wrap your exhaust in this stuff, near the oil pan.

Other advice is ventilation to the oil cooler, and bigger oil cooler.

Currently stock. NASA (at least, northeast) won't let me back until I get a seat back brace or FIA seat, with the rollbar in place. This seems to be a new rule for HPDE.

I got a friend local to me with some tips on relocating an oil cooler. I'll let the Dr. chime in if he sees this thread.

What seats have you been looking at getting Chris?

LOL, Pooface and I are experts in the field of oil rustproofing.

I thought NASA Mid Atlantic has the stricter rules. Northeast lets me go stock as long as I don't use R comps. Mid atlantic's rule on s2k...no roll bar, no go. NO buts about it.

Safety is important so a roll bar and a better seat will be worth it. The seat I bought was FIA approved. I made sure just so i wouldn't have to buy another one down the line. Granted it is for sale now so it doesn't matter

Hahaha!! My car was parked two spots over from him in that pic. Apparently it helped quite a bit. I thought that **** was an intake or something when I first met D. for originality and function.

I'm in the market for seats as well. At least the drivers seat. I'm tired of bracing myself with the dead pedal and steering wheel

Chris F is a *****. A real man would vent his hood with a saw.

My "custom" ducting reduced oil temps by 40º, and helps to make idiots think my car is ricey. Last time I tracked it they hung around 230-245, but that was a cooler day.

"Last time I tracked it." *sniff*

Chris rocket, your oil temps are envious. So is your wallet (I have $40 diesel truck oil gauges). You should go see my friend Frank down at Drivers Edge for some seats. OMP is da ****. He has a real comfy couple of street seats in right now, and the usual wicked race ones. You won't find the Grip in carbon/kevlar anymore though, it's been discontinued.

edit: Chris F, I got a spare hood in my storage area taking up space. If you want it you can have it for FREE.

should make it a condition that he has to hack it up for venting
