Default Ls or SI motor?

i have a 94 coupe dx, and im thinking of getting a swap within 1/2 a year or a year if i save enough money. i was lookin at hmotorsonline and the B16A and the B18b are priced almost the same. so which motor is faster if its put into a coupe? i know the b16 has no torque, but it has 160 hp and has VTEC. the LS has alot more torque, but has less horsepower and has no VTEC. my goals are just to have a car thats fast enough but not too fast. I/H/E and no turbo will be my setup. thanks

If your not doing turbo, go with the B16. More power, higher redline, more fun over all. Then do your cams and your just scraching the surface of that engine.

I say you should decide on your own, based on searching through old threads of the same exact topic.
LS vs B16 has been beaten to death, and its ALL personal preference

agreed everyone is different, and everyone drives different, me myself I love reving the **** out of my motor.
But in stock form a b16 in a coupe will destroy a b18a in a coupe

isnt the redline only 800 rpms difference?

ls at 7200
si at 8000

i myself chose b18b1 but i plan on boosting so that had a lot to do with it and it was a good deal

how bout both? ls/vtec.....have the best of both worlds

with equally decent drivers, both engines will perform very similarly, actually.....theres no "destrying"
(ls with a y21 tranny )

this has been discussed like a million times. Basically if you want a good motor for around town, pretty much good passing ability go with the b18b. If you like to rev astronomical proportions then go with the b16. think of it this way, the b16 feels like a D under 4000 rpms. On the highway the b16 will walk away from the b18. I'd go with b18 with b16 tranny. But to each, his own.

dont drive a honda

i have a b16 and in city driving i would crave the torque of the b18... nothing some mods wouldnt help though. vtec is fun, to just hear it come alive at around 5700 rpm all the way up to 8200 STOCK!

daily driver wise, if you dont want to have to downshift just to pass, i'd go with the b18. more torque, start with higher displacement, and can always ls/vtec! and the b18b is great for boost (just incase you change your mind)!

hope this helps any

Like the others have said..personal prefrence..I have a B18B1 sittin in my shop on my engine stand..hope to be putting it in in a few weeks. I got the complete B18B1 Long block for 500$ so I didn't think about passing it up for that. Like others have said I can always research and go LS/VTEC later if I decide I want alot more. Should be alot more power over the D16Z6 though. Helluvalot more TQ as well.

LS redline is 6800, not 7200 as stated.

B16 redline is 8000 on ANY 160 HP version and 8200 on any 170 HP version.

That would be a big difference.

Popular(common) engine redlines (for reference)

B16A 8000, 8200
B18C 8000
B18A 6800
B18B 6800
D16Z6 7200
D16Y8 6800
DOHC ZC 7200
D15B VTEC 7200

As someone who enjoys the sound of a motor well past 8K, I knew I needed the B16A. As far as I'm concerned, keep your torque, I'll be happy at 11K RPM.

Yes, LS VTEC Would be best IMO.

Why is everybody agruing about rpms.. just because it goes high doesn't mean it'll make power.... higher redline=smaller engine.
