no vtec??

Exactly, I'm not sure but it sounds like you're getting an error when vtec is supposed to engaged. I would start checking the connections on the vtec solenoid, the solenoid itself, and check your oil?
EDIT: Does the error code stay on after you go back down below 5000rpms? Have you done any mods or other fixes recently?

I would actually start by checking the error code first. I believe a CEL will cut the vtec regardless of whether it's actually a vtec problem.
Have a look round on the forum (probably in FAQ) about how to check the error code, then tell us what it is. Technically speaking, Honda tells you not to drive the car with a CEL on, although if you just drive it gently, you should be fine.
