Default O2 sensor spacer

My friend drives a 350Z and has a test pipe. In order to prevent a CEL he bought 2 spark plug spacers that are the same size as the threads on the o2 sensor. He then drilled out one of the spacers so that the o2 sensor would screw in all the way then screwed the second spacer onto the first and in turn into the exhaust essentially taking the o2 sensor out of the flow of the exhaust but still in the system itself. Would this work for R owners that have test pipes? Sorry if its confusing its really late.
