Default A few turbo install questions.

First of all, i'm in the process of installing a 'home' made turbo kit consisting of 14b, hf mani, weir adapter plate, etc.

My First question is this: last night I took off my exhaust mani and test fitted everything to make sure things line up properly (downpipe, piping, etc) and I noticed that the oil drain flange on the turbo hangs pretty low. It hangs so low that it's about level to where the tap on the oil pan should be. A kink in the oil return line is NOT what im looking for... does anyone have any suggestions? Anyone have this setup?

Second question: since it's a dsm 14b, the turbo is water cooled. Is this a must? Do I have to run coolant lines to the turbo? If it's possible to do this, do I have to plug the coolant ports on the center section of the turbo?

Any help is appreciated, thanks guys.

Also, search function is down right now

1. Never used that mani setup (im using a custom mani) but maybe you could tap the return lower in the oil pan?

2. I would definately run coolant through the turbo especially if it was designed to do so. Extra cooling and less cooking/coking of the oil. (you've got coolant lines running off the TB and into the back of the block.)

thanks for the response.

I can't tap lower in the pan because it has to be above the level of the oil.

Yeah, I know I should run the coolant lines, but I really don't feel like taking the time, effort, and money to do it if it's not absolutely necessary I guess im just a lazy bitch when it comes to things like that.

Coolant lines are not necessary. Just helpful when you plan to use a turbo for over 100K Not running em on mine

I figure if it has the capablilty to run watercooled you mine as well do it. It doesnt take that long to run the lines for it.

Also I can take a pic of my oil return. The drain hole on the turbo is almost level with my hole in the oil pan. PM me and remind me to get a pic of it tomorrow. I have a bad memory

I went through the same problem on my homemade turbo setup i am pretty sure you went to homemadeturbo.com. But anywho water lines are not necessary but are very simple to run on the vehicle. I would say if you have the necessary funds to buy the hose to run the water lines go ahead and run them or wait until you get the money to run the lines. I think you need about 8ft of line if you do the water line. As for the oil tap i used some thick rubber fuel line on my setup even though i was told not to it was the only peice of line i had and it wasnt waiting for autozone to open. I would use a barb fitting for the pan and then use some hard line that way there is no kinks and the gravity can flow the oil right down to the pan. just incase here is the link to the site http://homemadeturbo.com/turbo_projects/. You dont have to plug the ports for the water. The water and oil cooling passages are seperate from each other. Just make sure you run the vehicle for a minute after your done smashing. Dont want to coax any of turbo. hope everything works out for you
