Default Quick Question!!!

On my oil pan the plug for draining the oil stripped the threading on the oil pan. I was wondering how much does it cost to re-tap it or (re-thread) it. I did everything normal, but when I got to my friends house it was leaking oil. so I thought it was loose, so I tightened it. and it goes tight, then goes loose again, same thing repeatedly.

ouch... you MAY or may not get away with a shirt term quick fix by wrappign the plug with some thin material and then screwing it back on... very temporary. usually tapping or helicoil can be from 30 to 100, you could get you own coil kit and try and do it

**** that, ill leave it to the pro's.

I called a guy and he didnt sound sure he was like... Uhhhh for re-threading we use in insert and we have to dismantle and take out ur motor. so your looking at an easy over 200. My friend was telling me he was bullshitting and didnt know what he was talking about, which I hope is true.

you sound like you know what your talking about but I have to wait till monday. All shops are closed.

I changed my oil so I could ride today with my friends to the LA fair... now I cant ride at all.

an insert IS a heilcoil...soem can do it in the bike, but more than likely the case has to be accessable... so if the ehgine comes out $200 is not bad. most of that is labor... hence doing it yourself

its real easy to get access to it. if they put it on their lift, its right under the bike, real easy to get to. i hope they dont have to remove the engine.

Unless you want metal shavings in your oil pan, personally I'd drop the pan/motor before trying to insert a helicoil, or at least flush it out really good before starting the engine.

This is why they make torque wrenches.

$100 Craftsman torque wrench > $200+ in repairs for stripped threads.

No really, one of the best tools I own, a Digitork torque wrench by Craftsmen, ran me about $100. Does 5-80 ft/lbs and its easy as hell to adjust.

Do I use it all the time? Nope. But when I'm tightening down bolts is it worth having to know that I'm not going to be stripping stuff out? Absolutely.

Use them on everything, saves in the long run. Isn't the drain in the crank cover?

it cost me about 10 bucks - but then again I knew him - it shouldn't cost you too much. You could do it yourself, but I personally didn't want to try and **** up.
