Default My Car Is Over Heating!

Can some one please give me some ideas on why my car is over heating ?? it does it when i "race" on the street.. but it never did it befor.. i have a 90 civic si.. single cam vtec.. and some times when im just chillin on the freeway goin about 65-70.. it just randomly starts to overheat.. my cuzin said he had the same problem with his eg (single cam vtec) and he said the radiator cap didnt have any rubber in it to seal it shut.. so he got a new one and it fixed it.. i checked and that wasnt it.. so if any one can help me out it would be appricated.. thanks

Does your fan come on? Any leaks of coolant?

Yeah check the fan makes sure it works. Also check that damn relay. If its having trouble coming on just wire it constant and see if it will come on if not just wire it to come on when the the car starts and it will always be on. Thats the way i have mine set up.

theres actually a device that opens and closes whenever you need coolant its a little thing but I know I couldn't figure out why my car was overheating and I tried everything and eventually took it to someone and they just replaced it becuz it wouldn't open anymore... but it was so long ago... like 3 1/2 years I don't remember much about it...

start with the fan, then check the thermostat, the fan can be routed to run constantly but the only bad side is that in the winter time, i could never get my car to reach normal operating temperature, so i ended up making a small switch to turn it off and on whenever i wanted.....

nxt is the thermostat, just to rule that out as a possiblity go out and buy one, they're like $5-$6 anyway, and theres nothing ever wrong with putting a new thermostat anyway, just to be sure.....also just do a radiator flush, you might have some air trapped in the system

just a couple things to start out with...start narrowing the cause of the problem down..

If its only doing it at higher speeds and your fans are kicking on its most likely just corrosion and build up in your radiator. You can try and flush it but a new one costs like 99$ from autozone. Just did mine been fine since. I replaced thermostat and hard wired my fans first to make sure that wasn't it.

Exactly, thermostat and rad. are the only issues when you are moving, unless you are losing coolant somewhere. Fan should have nothing to do with it. Hell, I don't even think my fan works and I don't have a problem.

I wired my fan into a switch because mine would never turn on, but wiring it to be constantly on is covering up a problem which could eventually get worse.
