My HB is a rattle box
My 88 HB makes an annoying rattling/vibrating noise that comes from the back of the car. It's very persistent and driving me nuts.
I already twisted out the rubber stops on the HB door and wrapped the latch with tape but no dice.
I also get A LOT of suspension squeaking from the rear also.
Any ideas on how to make it stop before my head explodes?

i know my old 91 dx had a wiper on the hatch glass and it had a bolt in there that would rattle and drive me crazy..are u sure that it is ur hatch that is rattling?
close it and see if there is play when u push on it...

Ive noticed that the plastic hatch cover tends to make alot of noise. Try replacing all those plastic screws/inserts holding the cover to the hatch. This worked for me. Or try covering the edges and contact areas with tape or insulation of some sort.
Hope this helps.

I checked out the hatch door really good, I don't think that's it.
It's coming from underneath the panels somewhere.
I'm thinking about just taking all the rear panels out and putting in some Dynamat to quiet down any vibration/road noise/suspension noise.
Has anyone used Dynamat, and how well does it work?

mine squeaks because of the trailing arm bushing. I get all the time when I hit bumps in the road. All other suspension is good as far as struts, springs.

Has anyone used Dynamat in an HB? I mean covering everything, except maybe the roof. I know you racer guys would never do that because of weight, but I'm sure some of the audio nuts have done it.
I would like to know if Dynamat is worth the investment to quiet things down.

the rattles really are morse code cars just saying i'm doing dandy</TD></TR></TABLE>
yah exactly, i cant imagine a EF without it.
my crx did it brand new. back when my uncle first bought it. made in japan crx
Then you throw a stiff suspension, low profile tires, and poly engine mounts. It amplifies the rattles

True mate, when you fix one. There is always another somewhere.

hahahaahhaa
I just fixed my squeeky hatch latch.
Then the hatch actually loosened 2 bolts on the contact point, so i tightened that.
Then one hatch strut started rattling, need to tighten that.
Then the seatbelt pulley in the door came loose.. thats a loud one.
And my window on the passenger side is rattling lately, need to tighten it on the rail.
And my suspension/brakes are making a loud popping noise once in a while, i blame the rotors.
LOL It's truely endless. Just get a stereo system so you can crank it up and ignore it all. LOL

Go really hard core and just rip out all the interior except the front stuff and build a big *** speaker box with 4 12's in it
with 2 hifonics brutus amps pushing them. ratlles will be the least of your worries, trust me. i have managed to rattle out most of the bolts in the car at one point or another, even my hatch windows will pop open with the BOOM sometimes
one good trick to quiet down the plastic rattle and keep the screws in, i s a little dab of RTV silicone on them, helps out some. Dynamat is king, but i cant take the weight gain on that one, sucks to be a weight **** sometimes.

well... Mine doesn't rattle, but it has a nasty squeak. I think it is the bushings, but I will address those when I feel like it. Just like NikoZai said, get a nice stereo and crank it up
I'm still looking for my noise... damn it I think its just my sunroof tho I always tighten it but still... and the creaking in the back sux...
good luck
do something about the suspension thats what I think I might need to do

I have actually heard that if you install lower and upper strut bars along with new bushings and lube, some of the squeaks will go away. The rattles seem to be more cosmetic items like plastic/metal held together with pop rivets or screws. They start a little loose and get much more so over the life of the vehicle. Just weld all the metal together and get new rivets (you can get new interior plastic rivets at Autozone pretty cheap) to minimize the sound. That is a little extreme, but it worked on my friend's 89 DX. That hatch didn't make a sound after that unless we unleashed a little White Zombie on the neighborhood.
Your noise is probably the rear suspension worn out.
Probably the TA bushings.
As far as any interior noises/rattles. Take some eggshell foam and put it under every plastic panel you can get off inside your car.
That will keep the plastic from rubbing and resonating on the metal and it won't weigh your car down like dynamat will.
And if you ever want to remove it, you can. Dynamat will require much more labor to remove.
Another good thing is the eggshell foam is freakin cheap. Buy a foam pad for a king size bed and you should be able to do your whole interior.

I must agree there. After replacing the Trailing Arm bushings, the body firms up and handling improves. Considering the age of all EF's and older models, this replacement needs to be done.
