Default HELP - 1988 honda accord lxi will start then it will stumble and die

I have a 1988 honda accord lxi, 4 door, automatic with 152,000 miles. When I turn the key when the engine is cold, it starts. But when I drive the car and then turn it off and then come back and turn the key, the car will start then it will stumble and die.

It has a new altenator, new battery, new coil, new NGK copper spark plugs, new distributor cap & rotor. PCV valve, EGR valve, EGR control solenoid valve, and TW sensor were changed at 114,000. The starter was changed at 93,000. I have changed the fuel filter a long time ago. It has been over 70,000 on the fuel filter. I only use factory honda parts.

I have not changed the ignitor. Could it be the ignitor?

I have not changed the main rely. Could it be the main rely?

I know it's not a Honda, but my girlfriends Lumina did the same thing, and it was the ignition modual.

IAT (intake air control) and O2 sensors cause this as well, check those.

I have new NGK copper spark plugs & I installed NGK spark plug wires a while ago. Yes the fuel filter is over 70,000 miles on it.

when car dies u need to diagnose if it is fuel spark related.........if u are getting no fuel it could be main relay, fuel pump , filter.

if no spark it could be ignitor, coil,,
I would chk the main relay for any cracks

MAKE: 1988 honda
MODEL: accord lxi, 4 door, automatic
MILES ON ODOMETER: 152,000

There is spark because the engine starts. Then the engine dies.

new altenator, new battery, new coil, new NGK copper spark plugs, new distributor cap & rotor.

A bad main rely looks the same as a good main rely. I have changed one on an integra gsr.

OK let me rephrase the question,,,,,,,,,,,, when car dies does it restart immediately???if not u are lacking spark or fuel,,you need to see if it is fuel or spark related..........And a bad main relay might look the same as a good main relay on the outside but u need to take it apart and chk if there are any cracked solderings on the board ,,THEN a bad main relay is not the same as a good main relay

deserthonda, I really appreciate you help, thank you.

When car dies, it does not restart immediately. I have to wait a 1 to 3 minutes and then it will start. When the engine is cold, I don't have a starting problem. When the engine is hot, I have the problem.

I took apart a bad integra gsr main rely to look at the solderings on the board but it looked just like the solderings on the new main rely. I'll take the main rely out on my 1988 accord this weekend and take a look at the solderings.

deserthonda, how do I check to see if it is fuel or spark related?

when car does not start, pull a pkug wire , sitck a screwdriver in the wire and ground it, crank car see if u see any spark at screwdriver .....if no spark it could be a bad rotor, cap, ignitor, coil

to see if it is fuel related get a can of carb cleaner , pull the intake tube that goes to throttle body , spray carb cleaner in throttle body , if it starts it is fuel related,,,,,,,,,,,main relay, fuel pump, ....

How do you ground the screwdriver and will you get shocked if you stick the screwdriver in the spark plug wire metal end?

My '90 Accord is currently doing the same thing. It's supposed to be the crank angle/position sensor. I'm now trying to figure out what model my motor came out of so I can order my sensor. If anybody can help me the engine serial number under the F22A1 stamp is 1536733. Thanks for any help and I hope you can fix your problem.

It's really dangerous to stick the screw driver near or in the spark plug metal end while you turn the engine over. I think you can do this with the old american cars but these imports put out a lot of electricity.

Why do you think it is the crank angle/position sensor instead of the main rely?

Does you Pgm-fi light come on when the car dies? If it does or you just want to see if it is throwing a code, here are the directions.
