advice on cleaning/flushing fuel/gas tank (out of car)
Hey guys- did a search, but still uncertain.
The donor car we bought for new car had been sitting for a really long time (wellover 1 year w/ gas in tank) in someone's back yard.
Tank is out of car. Tank is drained ("nastiness" is the only description I can think of to describe what came out of the tank during this process). Tank has been sitting outside our garage for a few weeks.
We are getting ready to put tank back onto the car. We want to "flush it" first though.
What should we use?
Gas, mineral spirits, etc etc?
Know this is "basic" but want to make sure we don't make a "stupid" mistake here....want to go racing asap!!
thanks!

Eastwood has a few products for this:

I have seen the gas out of some old tanks, looks almost like varnish or urethane.
You could keep running fresh gas through it and your pump until it smells and looks like gas, or do what Keith said and have it flushed.

hi guys!
glad to see you are almost back racing again!
i seem to recall some old timers telling me that you can fill the tank with a few handfuls of ball bearings, then put a couple gallons of gas in it, and shake it all around vigorously. the action of the ball bearings in the tank combined with the gas will remove the rest of the crap.
then drain out all the crap gas and ball bearings; put another gal of gas in, swirl around, then drain that out; should look clean and ready to go!

ps i have not done this. just heard about it!

thanks everyone...
(Danielle here) I was wrong...the old gas has been slowly used over a few months- in our Honda lawnmower.... being that Lyonel hasn't destroyed the lawnmower by using it (which was probably his hope as he has been trying to convince me to let him have a riding mower)...maybe it will be fine to just flush it with gas (& we'll try the ball bearing thing if we have some)...
Lyon is chomping at the bit to get lots done today & I'm certain we'd have a problem finding a shop open for him to get it professionally flushed today.... on the bright side there wasn't much gas in the tank when we drained/dropped it.
He was about to pour mineral spirits in the tank...thats when I freaked out & came to do a search...then this post.... just b/c that method worked on farm equipment "back in the day" (he hasn't been a farm boy for 15 yrs) doesn't mean it is a good idea on the Honda.... I've not find anything on mineral spirits being good or bad idea on our cars.... so thought I'd ask(hence the thread)

How did you drain your tank? Did you just remove the bolt in the tank? I am in the same situation and I need to flush my tank out and am going to put new gas in. I can't get tubing in the actual opening of the tank and try to sphyon out the gas... any other suggestions? I just don't want the car to leak after I remove the bolt from the bottem of the tank.

smart way is to utilize fuel pump... we didn't do it that way though....we removed bolt (we have a pit in our garage though) & drained into container.
