ok I really have no clue what you're talking about? The tach needle is sticking? If so is it consistantly sticking and how do you know its only in fourth gear if its an auto? More than likely your sensor is screwed up. I think its the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) but I can't remember if there's a different sensor for the tach. Maybe someone can double-check that.

so when you're driving, the car just starts drops BOTH RPM and speed, and begins to stall out??

is it an auto or a manual

we are going to need the entire scenario of your drive cycle from the time you start it up until how long does it take for this problem to happen, it may be temperature related while the car is still warming up and probably when it is almost fully warmed up I am guessing. Then it doesnt happen again until after it has had a chance to completely cool down and start the heat up cycle again tomorrow???????????

My friend is having a very similar problem.

It does this only in the first, second, and third gears. The engine will go and at about 2k-3k rpms it'll cut out (or stall). BUt it does this problem hot or cold. Any suggestions? This is an auto trans. Also the CEL Does come on.

upinsmoke,

Got to radio shack and buy a 330 ohm resister and put it in the ECT sensor connector, do this when it is completely cold, maybe the car will run slightly less than perfect for a minute or two but after a couple of minutes then go for your test drive and see if the problem still happens about 10 minutes of running time, if it clears up then change the ECT (THW) sensor.

newtohonda,

get the code scanned and let us know.

I would if I could get the code to stay on. The damn thing likes to come on and off as it pleases, without any sort of ryhme or reason.

Engine Coolant Temperature sensor and newer cars are called THW, thermal water, or at least that is how I remember it. It is probably next to the thermostat housing and it has two wires, a single wire temp sensor is for the water temp guage, the two wire sinsor probably has 5 volts with it unplugged on one wire and when you plug it back in the voltage will be lower and as the car heats up I think on Honda's the voltage goes down more but if I am wrong then the voltage will go up as it gets warmer but I think lower, most cars get lower. You probably might catch it in the act if it is bad, the voltage will drastically change when it glitches and this wont be a quick glitch, the voltage will change for more than a second and longer when the cars starts to act up and maybe die. NOW we are assuming that this is the problem so you can just disconnect it and see how the car acts without it. The ECT sensor has very high authority when the car is cold (open loop operation) but has low authority when the car is warm (closeed loop operation) but if the sensor goes back to cold from being bad then the computer will put the car back into open loop and really mess things up. A hot engine does not need all that open loop gas (rich). GOOD LUCK
