Timing Belt argument (me VS. my friend) ????
ok, we did not put the motor at tdc like we should have before taking off the belt, can we just spin the cams to tdc, THEN spin the crank to TDC and put the belt back on, or will spinning them w/o the belt, cause piston/valve carnage?
what if a piston is in the up position and your turning the cams, could it hit?
whats the deal

No big deal on a stock block/head. Spin the cam gear(s) to TDC, them spin the Lower Pulley until the crank is at TDC, and BADABING. There should be no damage, and the belt should pop on like normal.
The only reason there might be damage is if you have the block/head decked, a higher profile cam, longer valve stems, or anything else that might create contact between the pistons and valves.
If that is the case, remove the head and then set them both at TDC while apart and then simply reinstall.

yes it could hit, but youll feel it. the valves arent that soft that if you just tap them with the piston it will bend but going over a cam lobe and have the cams force when it goes over a lobe could bend a valve.
if you can put the old timing belt back on and put the motor to tdc. if not then look down the cylinder and spin the crank and there should be a time when all of the cylinders are about half way down and then spin the cams then put the crank to tdc
