O.K. like the title say's I am prepping my header to be painted. I sand blasted it a week ago, but there are a couple of little spots of rust that have resurfaced. I didn't want to sand it as I thought sand blasting would have got rid of all the rust but some pea sized spots have resurfaced . I will sand those down and such. The metal is no longer oil free because I touched it with my bare hands. Should I use paint thinner to remove the oil and all possible traces of dirt and anything else? If paint thinner wouldn't work, what else should I use?

 

I've read on here that rubbing alcohol will clean off the prints.

 

First of all no matter what the paint on the header is not going to stay, high temp paint will eventually just flake off.. I'd suggest maybe getting it coated and calling it a day..

Otherwise you paint it and your going to have one ugly *** header in about a month..

Thats not neccesarily true, i painted my buddie's headers on his d16a6 and its been over two years, they are duller now, but nothing has flaked.. i just blasted it,and took a wire brush to it until it was down to the original steel then used high temp flat black .

 

I used high temp. black paint on my DC headed and it turned gray after about a week. And now there is some minor flaking in some parts.


Yeah make sure to get all the oil off. Maybe brake parts cleaner would work.

That's the problem though. No one ever takes the time and money into prepping it. Just sanding it or cleaning the oil off isn't going to work that well. I sand blasted so it will give the paint something to grab onto and also gives an almost oil free surface (unless you touch it like me ). I am not worried about it peeling cause I will doing all the prepping properly and I will use the right paint and cure it too. I am using VHT flame proof high temp paint. It's good till 1800F and is flame proof. I already did a practice piece on me P/S bracket and they aren't kidding about the flame proof. I held a propane torch to it for 5 min. and it only made it harder. The paint didn't even turn color either . Powder coating it would be nice, but the header is only one I made and it does have some inconsistency in the welding beads. Thanks for all the help everyone and I will give rubbing alcohol a try.

You could try acetone. that will take almost anything off.

 

any updates, did you paint it.. did it turn out?

Yeah, I painted it two day's ago. I slowly brought it up to temp. and it cured very nicely. No bubbles and it really stuck on good. It really all came down to the prep work.
