Default Quality comments and opinions appreciated

This is my deal:

I'm gonna get a JDM ITR 4-1 header with an upper heat shield, and a 2.5" Carsound cat.

Now, riddle me this: Would it be stupid to go with a 2.25" or 60mm exhaust? From what I've heard and seen I don't really like any 2.5" exhaust out there. And before people accuse me of being a ricer and saying 'your car sounds like a can of bees' I want to be able to back it up with some power.

I'll order a 3" Thermal if I go Turbo, anyway. Then I won't really care how it sounds, function over fashion. But I have to order a new exhaust, and my favorite 2.25" is the Comptech..

Similarly, would it be even stupider to run 2.5" pipe all the way back to a 2.25" muffler? I know a bottleneck is a bottleneck but I'm just trying to weight the pros and cons..

Eventually I would want to go turbo.. but I need a new exhaust now.

I'm thinking just maybe ITR cat-back or something simple..

TTT? ...help..

I can always sell the JDM header/cat and not lose too much money I don't think..

But if I run JDM header, 2.5" cat, to like an ITR exhaust... is that really really stupid? Pointless even?

Nerdish, running a JDM 4-1 to a ITR is not exactly ideal because the ITR exhaust is a smaller diameter than 2.5", but if you're only using it as a temporary system I don't see how it will do any harm -- it just won't be as free flowing. Dave-ROR ran a JDM 4-1 into a stock cat and stock exhaust on his GSR and pulled ~160 whp at the dyno (also running a AEM CAI) will all the belts on. That's +4 whp better than I did with the same header, Carsound cat and the SMSP exhaust. Granted, that only a 1% difference, plus mines a '97 with higher mileage and I never got a "baseline" run on my car so I don't know if we were equivalent in our respective stock forms. But, even still, those are very good #s from a GSR with just two bolt on's... If you can pick up an ITR exhaust cheap, I'd go for it. Another option would be to get an Apexi WS exhaust -- Nice and quiet, plus bigger diameter than stock, and reasonably priced, too. The WS is what I would have bought had I not got the SMSP. HTH.

If you are going to go turbo why waste the money to get a new exhaust, use whatever you have now and save the money for something nice when turbo

Because right now I don't have a muffler.

Thanks for the comments. SMSP emailed me a clip of his header/exhaust on a Dyno and it sounded significantly different then the clip of you autox'ing. I've also heard the WS is nice, but I've wary of the non-stainless steel B-pipe.

But I don't want to stretch my budget too thin.. heh. So I'll probably just end up with a ITR muffler or something. I'm just kind of disappointed because the opportunity presented itself and I thought I could take advantage of it..

Look at it this way, the JSpec R has the header with 2.5inch collector stock, but I seriously doubt the car comes from the factory with true 2.5inch piping all the way back. This is an N/A 1.8, and that kinda seems unlikely to me. I could be wrong however, as I didn't research this before posting.
