How difficult is it to replace right front axle? (Seattle HT's)
First off Goodyear wanted to charge me a total of 348.00 to install a radiator, and 102.44 for upper radiator hose, 25.00 for the lower. So I basically read a Chiltons and did it myself. They also said my cv boot had a rip in it. They quoted me 207.76 for axle and install. The radiator took me three hours, without even using the manual. Chilton's pictures aren't great at all for the axle install and I need my car for daily use. How difficult is it to install the axle? Anyone in the Seattle area want to help me out? I'd pay to learn how to do the install.
Passanger axle? hardest thing is getting the axle out of the transmission, your going to need a hella Screwdriver, or a long pry bar. there a Circlip that holds thats transmission in.
this is what I do,
Remove Axle nut,
Remove wheel,
Raise car.
Remove dampening fork,
Kock the Tie rod Ball Joint loose ( the one that is connected to the Steering Rack )
Kock the UCA ball joint (Uper Controll Arm )
pull the axle from the hub(Brake disc) its going to take some turning and pulling down the Controll arm, but itle come out.
Pry Axle from Transmission. Its going to pop once, then agian, The 2nd time its going to be the *****.
install is reverse of removal,
TAKE NOTE HOW ITS TAKEN OUT, cause there only one way to put the axle back in.

Is this easier than instaling a radiator? Because for some reason goodyear charges less for this process and it seems like its alot harder? I have a 91 sedan stock btw. I just checked and yep, the cv boot is definately ripped, with grease everywhere inside.
Its not too bad removing axles.....the best advice i can give is to get a slide hammer from Autozone on their loaner program if you can. You get 100% back upon returning the tool and its makes pulling those damn axles out 100000x easier.
I spent 4 ******* hours trying to pry it out on my 92 Celica ST. The next day i got the slide hammer and 3 jaw puller attachment and it took two pulls with the hammer and it was out.

I cant find the thread on it now, but theres a REALLY easy way to get the ball joint off. Jack the knuckle up with a floor jack, stick a wratchet in the space thats opened up, let the jack down (make sure the wratchet isnt on the boot). Mine just popped off that way, you may have to apply downward pressure along with the springs pressure.

Make sure you raise the car before you remove the wheel
It will make it just a tad easier.
But ya it's pretty striaght forward, it really just takes some elbow grease.

Sorry man... the grease is SUPPOSED to be in there. That's the point of the CV boot. It holds grease in to lubricate the CV joint.
