Default Neo-Rod 1950 *****'s engine choices, imports and domestic engines.

My ideas have move around a bit. I like the idea of the s2000 drive train. But i have a few other engine choices i am considering...

VQ35DE, the 350Z drivetrain. Good power, 6 spd, very new, tons of performance stuff. Possibly difficult to wire up, don't know if the 350zs comes with traction control like the G35, could be a problem.

Grand National Engine. 3.8L turbo V6. Ok power stock, still a domestic, relatively easy wiring wise. Still an old engine, might cause alot of expense down the line. Kind of rare to find the drivetrain in decent condition. The regal t was relatively the same, but with less power

VG30DETT. The 300zx drivetrain. Decent power, shouldn't be too expensive, nice to have turbos. The problem is that they are older and might need some maintenance.

2JZ-GTE, Supra engine. Great Power, awesome transmission. Highly unlikely to be found due to lack of production in the US. Also going to be extremely expensive if I can find a whole swap, not likely to be available.

350 and turbo trans is still in the running, though only likely if we just want to do the car and sell it.

and the real kicker. Flathead Ford V8, with a blower. engines are cheap to get and cheap to rebuild. Easy to make power with a diesel blower. They have an awesome look to them and are wicked cool. Downside is that we will be stuck with a stinky trans most likely.

I am interested in any advice or recomendations that anyone has. We are trying to pick a drivetrain, so I can start sorting out the suspension bits and get everything underway.

Here's what a ****** looks like for those who don't know. Not my specific one, just grabbed of the internet. It came with a High output 4 cylinder in its day, 78 HP or something like that.

Thanks in advance.

SR20DET--relatively cheap, tons of aftermarket

LS1 would be cool, although they aren't too cheap they make tons of power and you get to stay domestic.

Out of the choices you have listed, I would go with the 2jz

my only issue with the sr20 is that they are a little on the finicky side when you build them for power. You need build internals pretty quickly on the SR20. Still not a bad suggestion though.

Also keep in mind, we aren't looking for some ridiculous amount of power either. Most of these drivetrains will remain mostly stock for quite a while.

5.0 HO mustang engine, maybe? FI, reliable, good power with just basic bolt ons, and very cheap and plentiful.

you cant go wrong with a small block chevy, really easy to find parts, cheap to build and make fast, wiring is easy as hell, and im sure would fit relatively easy. and dont go fuel injected, unless you do an ls1

I was on that route for quite a while. But in the end you end up with what thousands of other guys have in their hotrods, another smallblock chevy and turbo trans.
I mean I understand the value of it, but we are both shying away from it. It would definitely fit in the ****** without a problem. Just a little modification of the firewall and its in like flynn. You really haven't seen someone do something like this quite yet. My cousin even has a 350 with a hot cam and a 350 turbo trans he was gonna sell us for virtually nothing, like 1800. But, like I said, you end up with the same open the hood scenario. You open it, you see a 350, you end up not that impressed.

I must say since I got motivated towards this project and got my dad interested, we have made some progress as far as what we are going to do with the car. We chose our front suspension, Fat Man Fabrication http://www.fatmanfab.com/ a mustang II based coilover setup, we decided on some body styling changes and various other things. We are definitely putting running boards on the car, as well as likely lowering it at least 2 inches. We have talked about chopping the car a few inches, but we haven't decided it if will actually look any better. The rear end will also likely get heavily modified, to try and eliminate the boxiness of the back of the car. Maybe total removal of the bumper tray to smooth out the rear end.

AS of now, If we see a T-boned s2000 or 350z, it is getting bought. Unless someone can somehow scare me away from doing either of those, that seems like our decision for now.
