EG....EK, Major Differences?
ek dx has a d16y7 sohc 16v 1.6 motor rated at 106 hp and long gears
not sure what the cx version has though . I know firm 92-95 it was a slow 1.5 sohc 8v motor rated at like 70 hp or somthing.Maybe somone will chime in......

More options? I think both have a pretty good sized aftermarket. Stock engines be damned.
Which is a stiffer better handling chassis?
I've driven an EG (used to own one) so I know it handles pretty decent.

I'm not sure so don't quite me on this, but i think an EG will out handle an EK anyday..
Also don't forget that the 92-95 civic ex/si came with the d16z6 sohc vtec rated 127hp or so i think and none of the EK hatch's came with the sohc vtakk.
It don't matter which will out handle, that can be fixed with very few mods, sway bars, strut bars, nice suspension setup, good tires.

EG is lighter and comes in two more trim than the EK does, VX and Si.
The VX came with the D15Z1 which is a soch vtech, its actually an economy design much like the L-series engines in the new Fit/Jazz. You can read about that here if you feel like taking the time.
http://asia.vtec.net/Series/Fi....html
The CX came with the D15B8 which is a 8v soch at about 70hp and the DX got the D15B7 which is the faster 16v version with 102hp~.
Then of course the Si which came with teh d16z6 the previous guy mentioned.
EK only came in CX and DX versions which both come with the D16Y7 gas saver engine running about 106hp~.
I haven't driven or driven in either so I can't really say anything about the handling or feel of the cars. And of course since these are Honda's the stock engines don't really mean very much since we throw them about in different cars all the time.

Thanks for the info guys.
I'm looking for a beater and I want back into the Honda thang. Just gotta decide if I want another eg or get an ek this time around.

np, but i would suggest getting an EK.. before i'm out of this scene i plan on owning one.. All my EG is doing is getting older and older..

if all your doing is looking for a beater then just get the eg because obviously its alot cheaper.

Beater is such a strange word for me. I don't want the typical falling to piece broke *** looking beater. Rather I want something in good shape.
I'll most likely go for an EK cause there's more of a chance finding one without rust.

Beater?
Get a 1992-1995 Civic Si hatch.
Why?
Well for the price of a slow-*** 96-up Civic hatch you'll get:
125hp SOHC VTEC and closer geared tranny(best EK HB engine is a 106hp non-VTEC with **** gearing in the trans)
Power moonroof (no EK ever had moonroof/sunroof)
Cruise control (no EK had this)
Power steering (have to get a DX EK to get this)
4-wheel disc brakes (rear drums on all EKs)
Tachometer (no EK had this)
All of this and it's still about the same weight as a stripped-*** base model EK hatch.
If it's truly a beater then this is the best option IMO. If you don't like the moonroof then get a 92-95 DX hatch. Way cheaper and still quicker stock than any EK stock hatch.
EDIT:
I just saw you're from Canada, so some of the specs/names might be different up there. I think the car you'd want up there is called an "SiR" hatch perhaps?

No, the 92-95 civic si is still an si in canada. some other differences are: both the 92-95 cx and dx have the same D15B7 motor and 96-00 dx hatches come with tachs.

Tach was an option.
Only SiR hatch was the EP.
Though it will be a beater the first thing it will get is a jdm b18c transplant.

The chassis of an EK is way stiffer. Honda chassis technology was never good but got better with the EF and DA (using the same chassis technology), then the EG and ITR (based on newer technology), the EK (based on even newer technology), and then up to the DC and EP cars.
You see alot of racers over here in Japan using 20kg springs on the front of an EK (maybe 18kg in the back), while people racing EGs over here don't go as high as 20kg because the chassis just isn't stiff enough.

ek's are nicer IMO. eg's are lighter and wont cost you as much. as far as speed, that wont matter in either car if your gonna drop in a b18. if you want a beater get an eg and save some cash.

I believe the spring rates have less to do with chassis stiffness, and more to do with not needing as stiff of a spring because the car is lighter to begin with.
