Started motor with wratchet on crank pulley
I did something stupid. I was adjusting the tension on my B18 and I had the wratchet on the crank pulley bolt when i went to start the motor b/c my father stopped by to take a look. The wratchet shot out from under the car and now now i have a rattling sound coming from somwhere around the tensioner and water pump. I haven't taken off the bottom plastic cover to actually look at the tensioner, but what kind of damage could i have caused? I pulled the valve just to take a peak and everything looks ok.
What could be causing my rattling sound? I'll probably just buy a new tensioner, belt, and water pump b/c it's about time to be replaced, but what else could i have messed up?
<<<-----Idiot

......ROFL, sry, but its just funny cuase i do that all the time, it makes you pee your pants cuase it sounds like the freaking motor blew up..
ive never had anything break though becuase of it, you might wanna torque your crank pully down though, it might of losend the bolt.

WOW
!
I thought I was a dork! No offense meant, but reading this brightened my day immensely! Check your WP and crank pulley, and make sure it is all tightened to spec.
Keep up the good work

Hmmm....I can't see this damaging anything. The engine should be able to take that abuse, that's why the cover is there in the first place.
My first guess is something (either dirt, crud, or plastic) broke off from inside the cover and is bouncing around inside the cover. There are a couple of little plastic spacers that are molded into the cover, maybe one of those broke off.
How about the spring breaking on the tensioner?? Maybe the shock was enough to break it or throw it off the attaching pin. If the tensioner was tightened already everything would still be OK and the spring could just be bouncing around.
Also, give us a little better description of the rattle. Does it sound metalic or plastic? Is it a rubbing sound or a jingling (loose change noise)
Damn this sucks though, to get behind the covers you have to take the crank pulley back off and I don't want to even think how difficult that is once that big engine is in the car. Do you even have clearance to slide it off? Also, be thankful the ratchet didn't fly up and hit your nice carbon hood!!
PS...I hate when people interupt me when I'm wrenching

Welcome to H-T!!
But, yea, spring looks good and the tensioner is tightened down. I'm going to wait to run it again until i get my exhaust on to help lower the noise leve to concentrate solely on the rattle.
But yea, changing the belt looks like a piece of cake while its still in the car. Crank pulley is easily accesible and all you'll have to do is remove the driver side mount. Surprisingly, there is plenty of room (I also don't have any of the plastic around my radius rods or the front, but neither will you when you put your full race on
)
