what do you think of this d16z6 setup?
I'm trying to plan out what i will want for parts for my motor rebuild, heres what i'm planning on right now:
93 octane uberdata tune at the local dyno shop
d16z6 block with blockgaurd *edit*headstuds not blockgaurd
b18 rods modded to fit
vitara pistons
light port and polish on the z6 head
aftermarket intake manifold (probably the obx copy one) *edit* maybe y8 mani
tubular turbo headers
2.5"-3" downpipe
apexi exhaust
gutted cat
30x6x2.5" core front mount intercooler
turbo unknown, possibly an IHI unit from a subaru, or some random T3
i'd like to keep cost to a minimum, and the vitara pistons and b18 rods are a big part of that.
i'd like to get 250whp, do you think the vitara pistons will hold it?
regardless of which turbo i use, what do you think the rest of the setup will hold?
thanks for any suggestions
p.s., dont rant about obx, i dont care about who made it, they generally copy someone elses design and reproduce it cheaper, and thats fine with me.

gettin the rods modified will cost a little bit for a machine shop to do......tuner toys rods are only 225 which is a hella good deal......although they will need to notch your block out but you can have them do that when they are honing your cylinder walls because after you install the block guard you need to have a good hone job........also I would recomend oil lines from stlthmodeperformance..........and a y8 intake mani......

They CLAIM that they don't need to have the block notched but a guy said that he had to on his d16y5 or something. Check it out.

ditch the blockguard and get arp or aebs headstuds. boosted sohc's have a tendancy to lift heads with stock headbolts. also lean toward some random t3 over the ihi, especially if its the rhb5.
they have a tendancy to make your cylinders oval out, as well as effect coolant flow. many people have done serious power without them. for the goals listed, the cylinder sleeves are not waht needs to be addressed, it is the head lifting. my head started to lift on like 170ish whp.
i dont think enough people have pushed Stock D-series to say what the limits are...i say safely you can do 250whp as long as you know what you are doing and have a good tune..personally im going to push the limits and see how far this y8 can go...for now im running 11psi on a super 60 cant wait to get my backup engine so i can see what it will do.

Sweet! Go for it. I remember someone on here (forgot his name) pushed 300 on a stock d16 at like 16.5 psi and ran 11s. But then I think it blew up when he pushed it to 20. Good luck.

yeah i saw that too..he was at the track and turned up the boost without tuning for the extra boost...im gonna try to at least run 15 daily
I'd also have a test pipe made instead of gutting your cat. It has alot to do with pressure and flow charcteristics, but gutting a cat causes alot of back pressure which will run you into problems. You will make much better power with a test pipe.

Ive been at 250 for at least 2 years now....I race alot and drive the car everyweek. Did 18 passes at the track in one day a few weeks ago.
quite honestly modding b18 rods will be cheaper for me (milling machine access) than having someone notch the block for me. the b18 rods also seem to handle the amount of power i want with a good amount of reliability.
does anyone know what they can handle max? i've heard 300whp reliably and 350whp max?
a test pipe would be fine, i just want something that looks like a cat. (for the po-po's)
i guess i'll go with headstuds instead of a blockgaurd too.
how much difference does the y8 mani make?
how does it compare to the obx one? (i know its oem vs. crazy aftermarket, but are either worth it?)
thanks for the help
