Default Testing VTEC Solenoid

I know there is a way of doing this, i just can't recall how. Can someone please enlighten me.

hardwire a switch.

12V power -> switch -> orange/white wire of the Vtec solenoid. then go for a ride, rev up to 5k and flip it.

not 100% on this so someone has to confirm it

Yeah my friend is using this method, but i don't think you really get the full affect of VTEC as you're not advancing the timing, you're just switching the lobes over right?
