Default Help! My 100% stock EK1 Civic is pinging!

Hello,

As the title suggests, I've got a 1996 EK1 Civic sedan with the D16Y4 (Australian) engine. The timing is completely stock, as is the exhaust and intake. No mods at all. I run 98RON fuel (best I can get around here) and it still pings when you try to pull from 60km/hour or below from 4th gear, also at times when de-accelerating.

Is this normal? If not what should I try to fix the problem? Injector cleaner?

Thanks in advance .

Cheers,
Tim

I don't think it's fuel related. How would your 98RON come out on an octane rating or is that just the reference is Aus? It could be a ton of things, even just vibrations when trying to pull at 60 KPH in 4th since this is roughly 38 MPH I'm sure your RPM is pretty low in this scenario, correct? Is it just a light pinging, like someone gently tapping a spoon on a tin can? Or is it more of a knock? How many miles on the car? Hmmm, I think this one will boggle me for a while.

Sorry it is pretty much the same as your 94PON fuel.

I'm pretty sure it's not vibrations, the revs are over 2000 so I don't think it is lugging.

Yeah the tapping on a tin can sounds about right, not really a knock. The car has done almost 180,000kms (just over 110,000miles).

Cheers!

Some may call me crazy but it could be a slight valve tick. The owners manual suggests the valve clearance is inspected/adjusted every 15K mi or roughly 24K km. It could just be more aparent under these situations. It's so hard to try to narrow it down without hearing the noise. Maybe you could tape record the noise and send it this way, just kidding. Damn so the gas your using is like a 94 octane? **** around here that's pretty hard to find. Regular is usually like 84, mid grade is around 87 and premium is 93. I can get 100 octane but at $4.50 USD/gal it hurts the pocket book. I think farther east in Indiana they have like 96 here and there. I'm pretty sure the valve clearances on your D16 engine should be the same as a USDM D16 which is .18-.22mm (.007-.009 inches) intake side and .23-.27mm (.009-.011 inches) exhaust side. This is somewhere to start. Here is a link to the UK honda site shop manual section on how to inspect/adjust the valve clearances..

Good luck bro, I'll check back in with this post tomorrow to see if you have any additional questions and hopefully we'll get this figured out for ya..

Yeah its about US$3.55/gal. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll check my valve clearances and post back here .
