my mom drives a '98 honda CRV A/T so EVERY part is bone stock. the problem is, it is pinging/knocking like hell recently.

i've tried using high octane gasoline(97 octane) and i've also changed the spark plugs but still the knocking is still there. it starts knocking/pinging between 1800-2000 rpm and becomes louder as i step on the gas.

i like to know what caused it to knock/ping suddenly? somebody mentioned that i should retard the timing, but i think that's only a band-aid solution since the timing is also stock spec, as i've said the car is bone stock.

if i retard the timing, driveability will surely be affected. does all car starts to knock with age? what can i do to stop this without altering any stock settings? will using a fuel injector cleaner help, maybe the injectors are dirty? any ideas? it is very annoying.

any help will be appreciated.

 

Don't know your answer, but don't use fuel injector cleaner or any additives to gas that's already good cuz they will burn out your O2 sensors.

 

i don't think we have an o2 sensor on our crv's here. our SiR here doesn't come with an o2 sensor.

no o2? you sure? prolly down by the cat. have you switched gas lately? maybe timing is off spec, did you check?

 

yup on our SiR here, absolutely 101% sure there's no o2. on the CRV, i haven't look but i'm 90% sure.

i haven't check timing, but could timing just go out of spec over age??
