Negative camber request, alignment shop
So today I go to get my alignment done cuz I nailed a pot hole yest & my car started pulling. I had it done 2 months ago too, so that pissed me off.
For camber I have a progress kit up front & washers in the rear. Before today my camber was set at-
-.7 FL, -.7 FR
-1.4 RL, -1.1 RR
this is what the alignment shop had set it too when they put on the camber kit. obviously having more negative camber in the rear then the front just causes more understeer then a fwd civic already has.
so today i decided not only would i have my toe fixed since it had been thrown off, but i'd also have my camber set at a more appropriate level for a slightly more aggressive driving style.
I was looking to get around -1.25F & -1R
Obviously the rear cant be perfect when ur doing washers, so i put slightly thicker washers on the left side to try & get it closer to -1, i left the right side alone since its already -1.1
So I go to the alignment shop & tell them to check my alignment for me. The guy shows me it, front right toe was way in, .8, from the pot hole i hit. Camber was thrown off on that side too. So I ask the guy to set my toe as close to 0 as possible & to set front camber to as close to -1.25 as possible.
He gives me so much **** about this, saying thats way out of the factory settings & it will be dangerous & wear my tires like mad. I tell him its not that much camber really & it will help to reduce understeer & toe destroys tires more then camber. So he says Im full of it & will come complaining to him about my camber in a few months when my new tires are worn out. I say just write that I requested it like that & do it, so he does.
I end up with these settings-
Camber-
-1.2 FL, -1.2 FR
-1.3 RL, -1.2 RR
Toe-
.05 FL, .00 FR
.05 RL, .05 RR
Obvously the front camber is how i want it now, however the rear is still a little more then i want. I'll have to play with the washers a little more to get it closer to -1. But at least now my camber is equal front & rear as opposed to more in the rear than in the front.
I just paid out for the life time alignment so now I can go back & have it adjusted every 5k miles if i want.
So i guess the whole point of this is, do u guys have to deal with this **** from the alignment tech everytime u ask for more camber up front or do the guys at the place u go to actually understand the benefits of adding a little negative camber up front to help reduce understeer?

I had the same problem at the alignment shop near my house. The tech went on and on about the negative camber. He said that only race cars need negative camber, or if i take all my turns at 80+ miles. But he eventually got back to work and did the alignment and set the camber to as close as i asked.

ok, at least i'm not the only one.
sucks they charged me $50 more to adjust the front camber cuz it's not adjustable from the factory he said. i understand its a little more work, but $50, dam, that's the price of an entire alignment.

That sucks... There are several guys that race scca that work at the shop that does my alignments. So they keep them on a printout in a folder and just yank them out when I go for an alignment. The tech does a great job every time. I go before any track event. Of course their price is a little high @$70, but they do a great job and don't complain about my front camber kit.

Actually, camber doesn't directly effect whether the car understeers or not. What it does is allow more contact patch on the ground during hard cornering.

U said it better then me. But u get what I'm trying to say. It will allow for a greater contact patch when I corner hard, thus giving better traction up front then before on hard corners

I just got an alignment cause I just lowered my car, I only got the front done. The tech said I didn't need to get the rear done. The toe is pretty good but I got like -2 degrees camber on the front. No idea what my settings are out back,

um, the tech is either high, dumb, or lying.
get the rear alignment done, possibly for free depending on how much you paid the guys.
changing ride height will definitely affect rear toe and camber.

It was only 35 bucks for the front. (canadian

And you just wasted the $35. Anything but a 4 wheel alignment is worthless; especially when you lower your car. I lowered my car, and my rear toe went out 1/8 of an inch. Not only that, but if you only do the front, you could have some thrust angle as well, since neither axle will be lined up with the centerline of the vehicle:
