Default Please post your window net setup!

I am struggling how to adapt my window net to my car and I am looking for ideas. I do not have NASCAR door bars, rather X braces. I have a drop down window net setup, but I do not know how to attach the bottom of the net to the cage, etc.

I had this same problem with the X bars on the driver's side. What I did (copied someone else's design) was weld the circular ends of 2 eye bolts to the cage, drilled a hole in each side of the bottom window net dowel, then ran steel safety wire through the eyes and through the holes in the dowel. This makes the window net semi-permanent, but I never found it to be a problem. I actually liked the fact that I couldn't lose it that way. If you want a more detailed description, IM me.

Here is my setup...

http://groups.msn.com/thegonza....msnw

I had the window net mouting where it can be removed either from the top or bottom. If you want to remove it from the bottom, simply (imagine the seat buckle) release the seat buckle. If you want to remove from the top, pull the lever back. Best of both worlds

Richy - I like your setup best as I have a buckle currently on the top of my cage and everytime as you get in the car. Bam! Ouch does that hurt!

I looked at OG and a couple of other and did not see this setup. Any ideas where I can find that spring release setup?

Jeremy,
When I had http://www.BSIRacing.com do the cage, I also had them mount the window net. But, all it is round spring with a dowl through it. If you want, I can take a close up picture of it tonight.

I lokoed on BSI site and did not see anything like this for sale. Anyone have a contact for BSI or know of a company that sells this design?

The one option is to use chain on the bottom sections. You can simply thread large chain links thru the ends of the lower window net bar and weld the other end to the cage. This would be needed twice to keep the lower part of the net tight.

I suppose I could draw a picture if need be. Some people use seat belts but chain welded to the frame is probably easier to do and wont slide up the side bars.

Then you have more to worry about than the net impeading your exit.

Send me an e-mail and I'll send you some shots of mine. You can use either the flat bar or rod 3/8" bar thru a pair of slots/holes in small plates welded to the horizontal tube or in your case on the upper legs of the X and the main hoop.

Mine's not quite as pimpy. Sorry for all the pics, but I don't see why you couldn't do something similar with an "X" door bar.

Similar to chain, I used cable, with crimped ends (somewhat like johng's photos). I didn't use a lower bar, but put a clip on both ends, so it is removeable.

Damn Thawley! That is pimpy! I should have looked @ it in person when you were up here.

Here is a question about the window net in Richy's car. Is it tech. legal? Is the lower 'belt' part of the net or part of the mounting? IIRC, mounting parts are supposed to be metal....... Now, if you ask me, the 'belt' will hold up better than the net.

Grumpy, what say you?

My fear w/ long links from the lower mount to the door bars is that its very hard to pad. I would personally avoid one that would require long wires, chains, thin bars or anything that I could envision my left wrist hitting with a lot of speed. Something you can look into is a custom fitted net. If you go this route, strikes me you can do a better job mirroring the opening you are trying to fill while putting the mounting hardware as close to the bars in the door opening (thus being able to put your hi-density padding in between of you and the window mount hardware). FWIW, you can get SFI approved custom nets cut for as cheap as $75.

Like Richy, I have used the seat belt webbing on three or four racecars for the lower forward mounting point with no tech or usage issues. It lets it easily drop out of the way when down with no bits of metal to scrape on for ingres and egress. It is also very adjustable to set the tension unlike chain where I would think you only have intervals of one link at a time.

Of the metal ones, I think Mr. Thawley's looks quite nice and drops pretty cleanly out of the way. I like the zerk fitting on the bearing, gotta keep that one well lubed! Since I am a big guy needing as much room as I can get, my top NASCAR door bar is still not really very high but is quite a bit outward into the door area from the main A and B pillar cage bars so a hard pivot and rod it seems to me might have some trouble fitting at the needed anlge then swinging cleanly out of the way. I would think the closer the top bar was to the plane of the A and B pillar bars (like most Xs would be), the better a metal rod style link would work.

Adam,
Tell me more about custom window nets. Who does them? Will they have the required rating? Etc.

Thanks.

Mike, it depends on what you want and the shape you are looking for. The two options I found were a strap type and a mesh type.

If you have two parallel sides, Tim Lee of Safe-Quip will make one for you off a paper template and I want to say its $50 + the cost of the mesh net (which is pretty cheap, like $20-25). Don't quote me on the prices, that's just from memory. I want to say he said it was a 10 business day turn around.

Safe-Quip is located in South Carolina,

If you don't have two parallel sides, I am not sure if that knocks the price up a bit, I wasn't too clear on that. Either way, he's a super nice guy and does a lot of work w/ club racers.

For mine, it was 5 sided and none parallel (two angle on the bottom for an outward bend). I had Safety Solutions make it off a cardboard template (you can make it from something more easily mail-able too). I went through BSR Products. The cost is typically $75 for a trapezoid (I think its a bit more for 5 sides now - sorry - its not much though). They too were a 10 business day turn around (think you have to have it in to them by a Tuesday).

BSR is located in both Charlotte and Mooresville, NC

They are a real good group of folks and also carry the inboard Safety Solutions net that I have in my car (image below) - guess I have a matched set LOL

I purchased a top and bottom window net mounting kit, along with a window net from Pegasus. Is it kosher to bend the end of the bar to allow proper fitment onto my rollcage?
