Default Two 14mm allen bolts on back of B18C how to remove?

Hi guys,

I've trying to remove the two 14mm allen plugs on the back of my B18C block so I can replace them with the babred fittings for my catch can setup. However the plugs are refusing to budge. One f the bolts is now slightly rounded, but I think I might still be able to get the allen wrench in there. I think if I take my 14mm allen wrench and cut a piece of it off I can use it in an impact gun. But is there anything else I can do to make this easier? should I heat up the plug with a torch or something?

they didn't have any at my loca stores. But the allen wrench I did buy is about 4" long, so I could cut off a 2" length of that and use it as a hex socket. I was just wondering if there was anything extra I can do to make it easier to take out. Like heat it up with a torch or hit it with some liquid nitrogen or something.

Put a 14mm wrench over the end of the short side of the alllen wrench(with the short side of the allen wrench in the plug) and then use a 17mm or bigger (cheater wrench style ) on the end of the 14mm for leverage. It always works for me

go to your local NAPA auto parts store. you can buy a 1/2" drive 14mm allen key socket with a long johnson bar. you will need quite a bit of leverage to loosen those suckers. there in there pretty tight with some type of thread sealer.

I also got a set from Autozone and used my 1/2" breaker bar. No problems.

You know what they say about great minds thinking alike? hehehe, I actualy tried that too...I put a14mm box wrench onto the allen wrench at the opposite side so it was like a T bar I pushed on one end and puled on the other, but it still wouldn't budge. It didn't slip out of the allen hole like with the other methods, but it was still on there too tight.

I did get it off though. Since my 14mm allen wrench was 8-10 inches long, I cut off a 2.5" length of the allen wrench. Stuck it into an impact gun and zipped those plugs right off.

Sorry to bring this back from the dead, but you guys that got it off, was the engine in the car, or out of the car?

I'm trying to get mine off now, and the motor is in the car. I can get my socket on it with my 1/2" breaker from under the car but I still can't get it off. I might have to raise the car some more and try a different angle to get more leverage.

I tried this weekend with no luck. I put my 1/2" breaker bar on the allen socket and get it in the allen hole nice and square. Then as soon as I start getting some good torque on it, the allen socket tilts. Any suggestions?

I couldnt find the 14mm hex socket anywhere locally(napa, sears, discount auto parts). I didnt wanna spend that much money on it so a snap on one was out of the question. Tried using the heads of bolts, and after a couple broken ones, it still didnt budge. Then, I bought a 14mm allen wrench from my job for 3 bucks. Cut a 3" piece off the allen wrench, stuck it in a 1/2" drive 14mm 6pt socket and worked like a charm.

This is a good idea. I might cut some off my allen socket because it's kinda long. The end also has rounded corners. Not from use, it's a new piece. This might be the reason it's not seating well. I'm going to try again. Would it be useful to spray some PB blaster on it or will it not get in there?

FWIW I had trouble finding a 14mm allen key locally (i don't even think sears carries it at all)

Anyway... you can hammer a 9/16 allen key in there. Its a tiny bit bigger, but more readily available.

Still need leverage for those plugs. I did mine on the engine stand fortunately.
