Tein Basic Damper VS. Tein SS Damper
So i finally decided to spend a little more money so that i could get some better suspension on my 96 teg. my question now between these two is what am gaining from the basic to the SS and is it really worth it. To my understanding the main difference is the adjustability of the strut, and i would like to kno if anyone has the basic right now and how they ride. Im just tryin to save a few bucks but if its gonna be a big sacrafice id rather pick up the SS Dampers. Guide me oh wise ones......

the SS are crap, but the basics are worse.
the hardware used in these kits is, at best, questionable--but basic owners get the worst of the parts bin and even if you save some money initially, it's never worth it.

now im startin to get really confused... the Tein SS Coilovers are crap too?!?!?! WTF LOL... i thought these were supposed to be pretty nice. well then i guess the question is now.... what kinda suspension would you guys say is decent for around $1,000 give or take a few hundred bucks.... i would prefer somethin adjustable and somethin that will ride nice... any suggestions?

hate to sound like a broken record but GC/Koni. Get the GC's with custom rates, since you're interested in ride quality, get something soft and progressive.
koni yellows are so far superior to the SS, Basic, and FLEX dampers that it doesn't make any sense to go with any of those tein setups.

FYI the Basic is the same as the SS on its middle damping setting. If you just want to lower your car and have a decent ride and a decent sporty feel, either would work for you (doesn't sound like you're into serious autocross or lap days). I would say for you it probably wouldn't make too much of a difference between basic, ss, or even gc/koni. I don't understand why people refer to basic/ss as crap... they weren't made to be serious performance units, they serve their purpose, its not Tein's fault for making units that appeal to the masses and trying to make money.

they're dampers that were designed to "LCD" spec. It's fine if you're trying to market a budget suspension like omni or whatever else is out there these days, but Tein uses subpar equipment in their setup, then expects their brand cachet to make it attractive to consumers. If you could get the same performance out of a far superior setup, in both build quality and performance and pay the same price, i'd consider it a moral imperative to do so. in the same respect, as someone who knows that the tein basic/ss setup is ****, it's almost my duty to inform them that GC/Koni not only costs the same but severely outperforms the SS in all ways.
I'm all for tein making money, but the "market" should adjust based on the empirical factors. Things should change such that Tein must adjust to the market by not selling shitty kits and charging $1000 for them.

I completely agree. I was looking at running Tein's also, but I talked with a buddy of mine who runs his own shop. We looked for a while, and decided on the Tanabe's. The springs don't sag as much as others do. And, the ride is incredible. I agree with the fact of using the GC/Koni setup. My buddy has this on his 98' SH Lude. Its very responsive, and looks great. Just my $.02
I agree, there's no reason for Tein to step up their lower models as long as they're satisfying the market and making money, personally I probably wouldn't buy tein's lower end.

right on fellas... much appreciated i think i need to sit back and rethink this one... im gonna look into the GC/Koni deal and check out tanabe " incredible ride " sounds good to me
i just got the basics installed last weekend and i don't know why the first person to respond hates on the teins. i have to say the ride is pretty awesome. very close to stock, albeit a bit stiff on big bumps, but really smooth over small bumps. don't get my wrong, it's still noticeably different from stock, but in a fun way. great handling in the corners also. i have zero issues (some people get knocking sounds, squeaking etc which results from a bad install). i had a good experience getting them put on at prostreet (they're a sponsor here) and i'd recommend them.
I just got TEIN basics on my ITR. They are worse than stock ones. The ride is bouncy and there is no point of ajusting the ride height because the manual sais that it should be set to 25mm (Highest point of coil). Maybe TBs aren`t good for ITRs for some reason. I suggest to save more money and buy a better suspension kit. Don`t do the same mistake as I did.
I am not to big of a fan of the tein myself. I have them on my delsol I think cost way to much for the quality of them.. I am running a set of d2 on my SI and like them way more than the tein and they are way cheaper.. Talk to tom at camp1320 he can get you a good deal on them.
