Default AutoX w/o power steering?

Does anyone here autocross without power steering? Especially no P/S on a rack designed for P/S? I'm thinking about getting username Padawan's P/S kit which makes it so you can remove the P/S and not be pushing fluid around in a sealed system. I'm pretty sure I'll like the added feel/less weight/hp gain on the street but I'm wondering if I'm going to feel like a (weak) idiot when it comes to tight autocross hairpins/slaloms/transitions. I do notice that a lot of times, esp. in 1st gear, I'm overdriving my P/S anyway....

Youll be fine without power steering. I have no PS, and autoX on race tires, no problems. Honestly, I like it better than running with PS.

What he said. Drive the car like that for a few days and you'll have no problem with effort.

Ok great I was just worried about slaloms n such but it probably won't be too bad, I work out, ya know...

Actually this will get rid of the annoying P/S overdriving problem. In 1st gear when I'm spinning >6k, the engine-speed-sensitive P/S is super-slow and I often hit a "wall" of P/S fluid when making quick transitions... it's disruptive enough to actually slow down my run because I literally can't turn the wheel fast enough. Whew not anymore. Anybody have Padawan's P/S removal/breather kit?

stop using 1st gear. 6k+ in first is plenty fast enough for 2nd. problem solved, money saved.

I cant stand to daily drive with power steering, let alone autocross. I find myself oversteering the car with it as effort is so much reduced. I also dont have issues on grid with race tires, as I dont have girly arms (and there's not much effort once you're moving anyways).

I wouldn't remove the P/S to try to solve a problem that you're having.

It seems that your technique is to blame, not the power steering. As someone already stated, try driving in 2nd more often.

Well it's not specifically to solve that problem, it would just be nice to get rid of it. I want to get rid of it for the usual 3 reasons... better feel for the road, marginal power gain, and a bit of weight reduction.

i have the kit and works great
just don't mind the leaks or zip tie instead of the supplied clamps

you'll never miss it and the extra few hoarse everywhere do help.

my dx comes stock with no p/s, living in nyc sometimes its a bit of a tussle to park but when your on the go the road feedback does help a lot. personally, i preffer no powersteering for anyone looking to maximize their performance driving experiance on and off the track.

Well, gosh. I guess I'm a wimp. Personally I *hate* the thought of autox without PS.

I hated it the first time out in my CRX, found it annoying the second time out, and didn't notice it on my third event.

I cooked a power steering pump autocrossing my Volkswagen and had some power steering issues in my Mustang at this year's Atlanta ProSolo, so its nice to have one less thing to worry about.

My car came without p/s and I haven't had any problems so far aside from the obvious "turning when stopped". Bear in mind that I'm 6' and about 135... Anyways, a friend of mine would like to convert his p/s rack into manual, can you pm me some instructions on where he could get a delete kit as well?

basicly run both lines(on eg or ej) to a t then that up to a small reservoir as a breather. you want just enough fluid to keep the rack lubed. the t will allow fludi to transfer from one side to the other. the effort is minimal. no extra effor compared to manual rack, other than the quicker ratio causes. and still fine with dot-r rubber.

2.3 turns lock to lock, Quaife guts in a Civic STD steering rack. 225/50-15 V710s on Kodiak 15x8.5 wheels. I love this setup for autocross. I love this setup for street driving. Ya, sure its a tiny bit heavy when parking/griding. All you gotta do is a little bit of upper body work out.

I thought that Quaife dealie wound up giving the same ratio as the Integra rack. If that's the case, the Teg unit is waaaaay cheaper, even with the power-steering delete business.

i've had the kit for over 30,000 miles now. it works well, just be sure you put the baffle in the reservoir and drill a small hole in the top so it actually breathes. oh yeah - and don't run as much fluid as he calls for in the instructions, you can almost completely empty it with no harm done, in my experience.

Great stuff, thanks for your help everyone. I can't wait to get the kit! My parents are going to hate driving the car even more when they need to borrow it every once in a while - lowered, stiff, no P/S, no A/C, black hood, lumpy idle, fuel kill switches... actually right now with the P/S my dad likes my car better than my mom's Audi TT 225, so maybe not!

I've actually modified the instructions due to the feedback I've received from users of the kit. Less fluid is kept in the system now, and following the new directions that I include should provide the results you're describing.
