My weekend at SP
So the cross over was supposed to be my first time back out on the track with the H4 car, not racing yet just HPDE. I thought everything would be fine, but nope it wasn't.
I spent the whole week befor trying to get last minute things on the car sorted out, like oil cooler, suspension, alignmnet, motor. And really didn't get any of them done in time.
After scrambeling all week to figure out why the car wouldn't start i took it down to Calculated risks were mike said he would help me get it running. Turnd out i had a bad distributor so i got that fixed, did alittle brake in on the motor. At that time i found out that the oil cooler that i installed was leaking at almost every possible spot. I had teflon taped all of the non AN fittings but they still leaked. So i teflon pasted them and that worked. Or so i thought.
At 11 oclock on thursday night i go to take it for a test driver. I try to put it in reverse, and no dice. I bought the tranny with a 4.7 FD from a member on HT, who had said that since the FD install that tranny had not been ran. Well when he or who ever installed the FD they missed up reverse. SO i didn't have reverse, but i did have all the other gears. Not that big of a deal, don't need it on the track any ways.
So i take the car around the block and there is a loud clunking noise from the drivers side rear. pull the car in check all the suspension bolts, and it was the combination of the spherical bearings damper mounts and a flat spoted tire. I had been given the tires for free, so i couldn't complain.
I get the car back onto the trailer at 11:45pm swing by the gass station fill up the truck and the car, then go home to pack everything up. Pack all my tools and anything i think i might need, and take a shower. It is now 1:30am on friday morning. I decide to leave right then for the track because traffic in the mornings is horrible on 50 and 80, which are the routes i need to take. I get to the track at 3:30am, lay down on the back bench seat and it felt like i had just closed my eyes when the alarm goes off, up and adam. I pull into the the paddock and find GOTO racing and pull in next to them unload the car, get the front bumber on and then go to the drivers meeting.
I miss the first season going over stuff on the car to make sure everything it good, but get out on time for the second session. I go slow trying to break in the motor (the night befor was the first time it had ran). As soon as i get up to speed i can tell i have some issues with the aligment, yep that thing i was supposed to get taken care of earlier in the weekend but couldn't because of work, and getting the car runing.
First session was successfull i got some miles on the motor and nothing broke. once i get back in the pits i find that the AN fitting were now leaking, not much but enough to matter. So check all of them, they are all tite. I start it up and see that there is still small leaks, so i get out the teflon paste and put that on the AN fittings that were leaking. It works, YAY.
I get on track for the second session, starting to push the car, everything feels great, the car rotates well but im not comfertable pushing it all the way. Coming into 8a the car infont of me checks up for no reason i could see, so i left, and the back end comes right around, counter steer once twice, woooohoooo got it back.
Came in aftert that session and the vavles were starting to get loud, it is a brand new motor so i new i would have to re set them, i was just planning to do it friday night or saturday.
I pull off the valve cover after the motor cooles, and i find that one of the cylinder number 2 exhaust valve adjust nuts WASN'T THERE. I check threw the head, nope no were to be found.
So i drain the oil and drop the pan and there it is, with out a mark on it. I was very happy to find it. Not wanting to use that stud or nut again i call Jeremy at redzone and ask if he has any laying around, he says he does and he will give it to andrie to take up saturday morning. Im greatly releaved and forget about the car.
Me and a few of the Nor Cal HC guys take up an offer of a team mate of mine to come enjoy Thai food at his family resturant near the track. I must say this was my first time eating thai food and it was AWSOME, had some Thai beer and was ready for bed.
Saturday was a day were i wasn't running because the HPDE filled up very fast. So it was my day to help Mike Quan out with his H4 car. the day went good, the race was good, untill we had a run it with another H4 car on track which resulted in a DQ for us, which REALLY REALLY sucked but hey that was the ruleing and we will live with it.
Earlier in the day when there was some down time i set out to install the new vavle adjustment stud and nut. jeremy from redzone came by and ended up basicly doing it all for me, he did it very quickly and the car started up and ran great. He also helped me with the oil cooler problem and the leaky AN fittings we cleaned them up and put new liquid teflon on them it really slowed the leaks this time.
Bernardo came by and introduced himself and helped me with the suspension setup, and tire pressures. It really would pay off.
After the race me and mike set out to fix my horrible alignment problems. The car ended up having something like 1.5 inchs of toe up front and 1 inch in the rear (sorry don't remeber in or out). Mike got under there and on the third attemped have 1/8 inch toe in up front and 1/16 toe out in the rear. I took the car aroudn the road inside of SP and the car tracked stright and didn't pull like befor, so i was very happy.
We then enjoyed the NASA BBQ, well i enjoyed the beer more then the food. And movie night was great.
We went back to the hotel and crashed hard, woke up early sunday morning and got to the track. I got my car passed threw tech and went to the drivers meeting. Only had enough time to Tq the wheels and set the pressures. I got out on track, we had to yellow laps to being with then i managed to get two clean hot laps, the first was a 2:11:xx and the next was 2:10:xx. The car felt great and i felt great being able to comfertably push the car, thanks to bernardo's suggestions to the suspnesion and tires.
For the next session i droped the tire pressures, and my main goal was to figure out the turn 2 and the carousel, after talking to mike and getting some good info i was much faster in the two corners.
Session 3 no changes i just wanted to driver. I was even more comfertable with the car. This session i had 4 good clean laps and was able to do one low 2:08:xx and one mid 2:08:xx. I was very happy the car felt good and i was improving my times every session.
I know were i can pick up alot of time, i just need more confidence. The S's and turn 10 at SP are two parts of the track that are very fast yet VERY scary, so i careful around the two areas.
The last session of the day, i droped the tire pressures alittle more, it was now about 100 out side. after one warm up lap i was able to get 4 clean hot laps and the car felt great, the tire pressures seemed to be very good. This session my times again improved, i was able to get a mid 2:07:xx and 3 other 2:08:xx.
Over all this weekend was VERY VERY VERY testing. But with the help of people like Mike Quan and Jeremy from RedZone i dealt the the problems and it paid off big time
It was also great to meet a bunch of other HC drivers, John and the PacNW guys, Sam, bernardo, benny, johnny mac, and the rest of the socal guys, and Sam and his buddy from AZ (sorry couldn't remeber your name).

Hahaha ya my buddy had to go check his pants after the ride.
I must say the last time i was out on the track my car had 70 more HP and about 50 more FT/lbs of Tq, this thing really doesn't go on the strights compared to it, but i like going slower on the strights and faster threw the turns!!
