Default H22 auto tensioner failed

I had posted this before thinking it was my water pump that had broke but I have come to the conclusion that it is my tensioner. Let me explain what happened, I was driving in fifth gear at around 4000 rms when all of a sudden my car shuts off. I actually didnt even feel it shut off, I only realized it when I went to give it gas and the car didnt accelerate. I pull over and try to start it with no luck. After pulling the valve cover off I notice the timing was off quite a bit (more than a couple teeth) and the timing belt just slid off the cam gears very easily. My question is can this cause any engine damage? I had just changed my valves to ferrea SS valves and added new RM spring and retainers. I have already purchased a new timing belt, water pump, and i'm doing the auto to manual tensioner. Please let me know what you guys think.

Have a leakdown test done, you may have bent some valves.

You need an air compressor and a cylinder leakdown tester. You test each cylinder at TDC between the compression and power strokes to see how much cylinder leakage you have, and you listen around the car to see where the air is escaping (intake, exhaust, oil filler hole) if the loss is out of spec.

Got it, but how do I actually do the leakdown test?

Typically, you regulate 100 psi from the tank into the cylinder, and then measure the pressure drop on the leakdown gauge. That gives you the % loss.

If it makes you feel any better I had the same thing happen at 70 mph and my motor made it out fine......
